Health care resolution wins passage
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
Pahrump Town Board Chairman Laurayne Murray may be off enjoying the cruise she won from Terrible's Lakeside, but as the saying goes, the show must go on. So, too, must the business of the town. With that in mind, Vice Chairman John McDonald presided over the board's regular meeting Tuesday, Dec. 11, at which a variety of business was conducted. The board approved sending a letter of appreciation to West Wendover for allowing the use of their mobile fire training simulator, or "burn tower." The burn tower allowed the fire department to conduct training drills on extinguishing fires in two-story buildings that could be commercial or residential, as well as various rescue exercises. People specifically noted with gratitude include Department of Public Safety Southern Training Coordinator David Fischer, DPS State Fire Marshal Chief Wright, and West Wendover Fire Chief Jeff Knusten. The trailer is funded by state Emergency Response Committee grant money and as such required no expenditure from the town. A "Nevada Health Care for All" resolution was passed with Board Member Nicole Shupp voting against it. The resolution calls on the federal government to enact legislation by 2010 that guarantees access to health care for every person in the United States. Pahrump's resolution is part of a statewide movement by the Nevada for Health Care Voters group which is made up of Nevadans who have pledged to vote only for a presidential candidate that makes health care a top priority. The group has presented similar resolutions to cities and towns statewide. Pahrump will host a Marine Corps League and Marine Corps League Auxiliary convention at the Saddle West May 9-11. The town will be promoted at the event through a full-page ad in the convention's program book now that the board approved funding the ad with $100 of room tax money. The Pahrump Veteran's Memorial will soon have two howitzer cannons thanks to efforts by Marine Corp League Detachment 1199. The surplus equipment could only be requested by a veteran's association, but the town approved the placement of the artillery at the memorial. Progress is slowly but surely being made on the proposed fire station to be located on Kellogg Road. The project is literally moving forward from the ground up as the board approved a service agreement with WillDan Engineering to furnish a geotechnical report on the site. In addition, WillDan will review existing data to determine the condition of subsurface conditions, field investigations including soil borings and percolation testing, lab testing soil samples, and geotechnical engineering analysis to determine subsurface profiles. The board approved funding the agreement for a cost not to exceed $10,925 to be funded from with fire impact fees. |
