Kevin Nixon, the coach of the Las Vegas Bishop Gorman Junior Varsity girls' basketball team, rescued it.

If he hadn't, the trophy the future Lady Gaels had received for finishing second in the Pahrump Valley Times Trojans Cage Classic Saturday would have wound up in a trash can.

The Gorman girls had been presented the trophy after they lost 49-46 to Pahrump Valley in the finals, played in the Ninth Grade Academy gym. Who dumped the trophy into the can is not known, but that is where one of the people working the tournament said he saw it. Nixon apparently saw it and was later seen holding the trophy in the Ninth Grade Academy hallway.

Earlier, the most valuable player plaque awarded to Jim Carter of the boys tournament champion Bishop Gorman JVs was found abandoned on the scorer's table.

Because of that incident, it was decided to vacate the award and present it to Darius Dolly of the Pahrump Valley varsity team, which had fallen 78-71 to Gorman in the tourney finals. Dolly, the Trojans' point guard, had scored 25 points in the finale.

Bishop Gorman is in the Class 4-A Sunset Region Southwest Division, where Pahrump Valley will be a member in the 2008-2009 school year.

On the boys' all-tournament team, originally named after the championship game, were Carter and teammates Deandea Kambala and Taylor Spencer, along with Ben Upton of Amargosa Valley Horizon Academy, and PVHS's Dolly and Marvin Weekly.

Upton, who scored 24 of Horizon's first 38 points, was injured during Horizon's 67-40 loss to Pahrump Valley in the semifinals.

On the girls' all-tournament team were MVP Megan Meads, Kristi Daffer and Brittany Orr of Pahrump Valley; Faith Lutheran's Megan Smith, and Bishop Gorman's Ashlin Grace and Amber Lane.

Faith Lutheran lost 58-45 to Bishop Gorman in the semifinals, with Smith scoring 18 points.

While the tournament was ongoing, PVHS athletics director and girls coach Bob Hopkins was notified by Lance Englund that a person identifying himself as an ordinance enforcement officer said the sale of Christmas trees at Wulfy's was illegal, because there was no permit issued.

In actuality, there was no violation of any town ordinance, since the sale -- being conducted as a fund-raiser for the Pahrump Valley High School athletics department -- was on private property and was being held with the approval of Wulfy's. The sale is also proper because the school is a public entity and can conduct such sales without a permit.

The sale will continue until all of the trees have been sold. If anyone is interested in buying a tree, contact the PVHS athletics department at 727-7908 during school hours.
