Wrestling fans with nothing to do at 3 p.m. today should be in the Boulder City High School gym.

That's when Pahrump Valley and Mesquite Virgin Valley -- dominant teams in the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League in this decade -- clash.

It's the league opener for the Trojans, while the Bulldogs won their first two matches last week. Before leaving Boulder City, the PVHS matmen will take on Overton Moapa Valley and the Eagles.

On Dec. 19, the Trojans will make the first of home-mat appearances, when they host league duals against Las Vegas Faith Lutheran and Boulder City in the Ninth Grade Academy gym.

The new gym floor in the Pahrump Valley High School building is tentatively scheduled to be installed by Jan. 10, according to a spokesman of the company doing the work. The floor was damaged during a rain storm in September.

Pahrump Valley goes into today's action with a 12-2 record, after the Trojans finished fourth among 24 teams in the always-tough Sierra Vista Duals in Las Vegas, winning four of six matches.

"I thought we did really well," said Craig Rieger, the PVHS coach. "We went out there aggressively; for instance, Chris DeMille was only 1-5, but he went out there and wrestled all 36 minutes and was tough. He just went up against better opponents."

The Trojans defeated Las Vegas Valley 76-0 and Corvallis, Ore., 40-39 on Friday to earn a spot in the Championship pool for the first time ever. The eight teams with the best records qualify for that pool and come back Saturday to battle for the title.

The Trojans defeated Holbrook, Ariz., 48-30, in the first match, but lost 55-18 to Nevada Class 4-A defending champion Las Vegas Cimarron-Memorial to drop into the consolation bracket.

Pahrump Valley outworked Henderson Basic 45-22, but fell 34-33 to San Clemente, Calif., in the match for third place.

"We wrestled all 4-A or bigger schools there; Cimarron-Memorial destroyed everybody," said Rieger. "We didn't have (James) Chapman for every match; he was in Pahrump taking his SATs Saturday. I feel good about the way our wrestlers competed."

Friday and Saturday, Pahrump Valley will be in St. George, Utah, for the Desert Storm Invitational. "Again, we'll be going up against some more strong teams in that tournament."

NOTES -- Pahrump Valley will host the Southern 3-A regional wrestling tournament Feb. 2 ... The state 3-A tournament will be contested at Overton Moapa Valley Feb. 8-9 ... Class 2-A will be at a southern Nevada site, with 4-A at Cimarron-Memorial ... Pershing County Lovelock, Pahranagat Valley Alamo, the Winnemucca Events Center, Reno Hug and Las Vegas Sierra Vista will host other regional or state-level tournaments.
