School board approves improvements
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
Pahrump Valley High School will be more secure with the board's approval of a bid from ABS Inc. to install a security system for $89,500. Although the agreement guarantees completion within 90 days, Director of Maintenance and Operations Bob Whimpey informed the board the job would be completed during the winter break because having no students in the school will expedite the process. The board also created 11 new funds in compliance with Senate Bill 404, which authorizes school districts to apply for additional state funds for specific schools. Under the legislation, schools submit site improvement plans that request funding for specific areas that need improvement. The district's transportation hub located on Woodchips Road will be improved with the board's approval to go to bid for various site improvements. Cameron McRae, transportation supervisor, informed the board that the preliminary engineering work had already been completed. Improvements slated for the facility include a 1,200-square-foot addition to the existing building for increased office space, a fuel bay, a pad for a future additional building, and paving that will increase the parking lot area. McRae said he hopes to have a bid approved by Jan. 10, start construction in February, and have the project completed by June or July. The district's distance education program was renewed by the board. The plan was deemed excellent by a Nevada Department of Education consultant. Having met all of the state's criteria, the district's progressive discipline program was also approved. Superintendent Rob Roberts announced that the haunted house fundraiser put on by Joanne and Chris Baumgarten during the month of October raised $419 that was given to the school district. The Baumgartens opened up their traditional Halloween house to the public this year and asked for $5 donations. School Board President Dennis Keating announced Pahrump Valley High School athletic program's Christmas tree sale. Residents in need of a tree are invited to purchase one of the 350 available at the high school. All proceeds will go to the athletic program. |
