Generators, artillery on Pahrump agenda

The town board will hold it's last meeting until the new year Tuesday, Dec. 11, and has a jam-packed agenda to get through. Some of the "hot topics" to be bandied about include the following:

For those of you whose interest was sparked by a proposal from Vice Chairman John McDonald at the beginning of this year, to install standby generators in the town in case of a regional power outage, this meeting is must-go.

McDonald originally proposed the idea after a streak of several power outages left Pahrumpians in the cold dark of winter during early January.

A permanent generator installed at the main fire station, as well as a portable generator at the community center, were proposed by McDonald.

The plan fizzled out in October, however, when the board received a cost estimate of $82,000 for the engineering and design costs for both generators.

Although only installing one generator would have slashed the price, the money factor remained daunting as the estimate didn't even include construction.

The board is slated to review the report by the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Advisory Board from last April as well as hear a presentation from Paul Wagner on an alternative plan.

In addition, the plan could be removed from the control of WillDan Engineering, the firm with which the town has a service agreement for such projects.

The board will consider a resolution rescinding Al Balloqui's appointment as volunteer economic development coordinator for the town.

But don't let that fool you. Balloqui has been hard at work as one of the Pahrump Alliance Valley Economic Development's executive board.

The proposed revocation of the volunteer position is just to ensure there's no conflict of interest.

PAVED, the non-profit corporation formed to help foster the town's growth and also spearheading the proposed fairgrounds theme park projects, was formed as a non-profit corporation so that funds could be solicited from private investors.

Speaking of PAVED, they will be asking the town for funding to be participants in the West Coast Advanced Design and Marketplace Business Convention in Anaheim, Calif.

There's nothing Mickey Mouse about this convention, which will take place Jan. 29-31.

For those of you keeping tabs on the Pahrump Veteran's Memorial, you'll be interested in attending the meeting to see if the board approves and authorizes the placement of surplus artillery pieces on the property.

A proposal to get things moving for the proposed Kellogg Road fire station by WillDan is also slated to be discussed.

The proposal includes furnishing services in conjunction with a geotechnical report and has a price tag of $10,925.
