Letters to Santa

The Pahrump Valley Lions Club and the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce invite all children through the age of 12 to write Santa at P.O. Box 133, Pahrump, NV 89041-0133.

Because Santa and his elves are getting on in years, please be sure to include the name, address and phone number of each child.

This allows Santa and the elves to respond to each child.

Women Motorcyclist

A new group of women motorcyclists is forming. The first meeting will be Jan. 17 at the Subway on Highway 372, and they continue to meet every third Thursday of the month. The group plans to ride after the meeting weather permitting.

The Pahrump Community Library is located at 701 East Street, and is hosting the following events in December:

The winter reading program continues Tuesdays and Wednesdays through Dec. 18.

Christmas parade of lights

The VFW and Spotlight on Pahrump are sponsoring a Christmas parade of lights for vehicles and in particular, RVs decorated with lights for Christmas.

There will be a parade of the entries through the Calvada eye beginning at 6 p.m., Dec. 8.

Entry fee is $20 per vehicle.

All proceeds will be dispersed to local charities through the VFW.

Quilts charity fund drive

Quilts 4 Cancer, a 501(c)(3) charity, is looking for people to share their sewing talent and basic quilting to make quilts for adults with cancer.

As supply costs skyrocket for shipping and handling, the charity is in great need of batting and backing.

In Nye County, many residents are being treated for cancer. If you want to donate a quilt, it should be at least 50 x 50 or larger, any pattern and color and should fit most home washers and dryers.

Pahrump area includes Beatty, Amargosa, Death Valley, Tonopah, Sandy Valley, Shoshone and Tecopa.

Retired/senior program

The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteers need help.

This program enables the elderly to stay in their homes by assisting with daily maintenance such ash shopping, medical appointments, etc.

RSVP reimburses volunteers twenty-four cents per mile up to $20 per month and carries worker's compensation and excess auto liability on all volunteers.

Additionally, volunteers receive training, annual seminar education and appreciation award dinners.

Volunteer Homeland Reserve Unit

VHRU is an organized group of retired and former law enforcement officers with the mission of providing trained and experienced resources to public safety agencies in Nevada and, potentially, to surrounding areas.

VHRU maintains a web site that describes the mission and provides information regarding the organization, leadership, and on-going activities. The web site also contains an application form that can be downloaded by any former law enforcement officer who wants to become a part of the organization.

Animal shelter needs volunteers

The Nye County Animal Shelter is seeking volunteers to work either at the shelter or in the spay/neuter clinic. People who love animals and who want to learn new skills should stop by the Nye County Animal Shelter, 171 N. Kittyhawk Dr., or call 751-7020.

VA van

A van is available to veterans needing transportation to the Veterans Administration Clinic in Pahrump.

High Desert Bead & Fiber Artists

The High Desert Bead & Fiber Artists Society for adults meets every Tuesday from 11-2 p.m. at Seemores' Too on Highway 160.

Prescription meds assist

Nye County, in a joint effort with the National Association of Counties, is offering a prescription discount card for those Nye County residents whose prescriptions are not covered by insurance.

Enrollment is free and there is no paperwork to complete or eligibility requirements to meet. These cards are accepted at all Nye County pharmacies.

Pick up cards at pharmacies or stop by Nye County Health and Human Services, located at 250 N. Hwy. 160, Suite 4, or call 751-7095.

Power wheelchairs

The Senior Wheels USA program makes power wheelchairs available to senior citizens and the permanently disabled at no cost to recipients if they qualify.

Power wheelchairs are provided to those who can no longer walk or self-propel a manual wheelchair and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required.

PV Performing Arts Center

Pahrump Valley Performing Culture Arts steering committee is working to bring a performing culture arts center located in the Calvada eye. Four committees are working on this project.

Nathan Adelson Hospice invites those who grieve the loss of a loved one to the adult grief support meeting at 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, 1480 E. Calvada Blvd.

Coat drive needs are small

The most requested gift from Santa is a warm coat.

Response has been wonderful but really needed are coats for small children and babies.

Drop off your new and gently used coats until Dec. 15 at Mankins Allstate Insurance, 1271 S. Hwy. 160 (across from Saddle West) or Dream Homes, 3100 S. Hwy. 160, during business hours.

The coats will be donated to No to Abuse for distribution to the children of Pahrump.

Angels Have Wheels

All Medicare recipients should now be aware that if they suffer from conditions such as arthritis, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disorders, and have difficulty walking or propelling a standard wheelchair, they may be eligible to receive an electric wheelchair paid for by Medicare. Toys for Tots charity trail rides

Saddlebag Santas Children's Chairities will sponsor guided trail rides to benifit Toys for Tots.

The schedule is as follows:

Dec. 8 and 9 -- Short Branch Saloon in Crystal

Dec. 15 and 16 -- Steiger Ranch

The Saturday rides are at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday rides are at 1 p.m. All rides are approximately two hours. The cost is $25 per person.
