An accident over Thanksgiving weekend at Dumont Dunes has left Daniel Lee Murphy II, 9, in a coma.

His family is asking for the community's support to help ensure he continues to receive the medical care necessary for his recovery.

Murphy was riding his motorcycle on Sunday, Nov. 25, when he collided with a sand rail at the bottom of the dune.

Although he was wearing a helmet and did not suffer from any external damage or skull fracture, he did suffer what doctors call a "closed head injury."

In addition, Murphy suffered a liver injury which doctors said would heal on its own within 60 to 90 days.

Murphy has had surgery to relieve the swelling around his brain but has yet to regain consciousness.

He is currently in the UMC Trauma Center in Las Vegas.

An account has been opened at Bank of America that can accept donations.

For security reasons the account number is not public, but donations can be made to the Daniel Lee Murphy II Medical Fund.

In addition, a Web site for Daniel Murphy has been set up at www.caringbridge.org.

To get to Daniel Murphy's page, simply type in "DanielMurphy," all one word.

A short registration will allow you to receive continued updates on his progress as well as leave a post or prayer for his family.

Daniel Murphy's parents, Dawn and Danny Murphy, ask that they not be contacted for information as they are focusing on being at their son's side.

If you need to speak to someone immediately, please call Pam Leavitt at 702-234-0985.

Sally Murphy, Daniel's grandmother, is also asking for the community's prayers.

"We appreciate any prayers," Sally Murphy said. "We acknowledge miracles."

"Maybe some good will come out of this, because they do need more safety regulations," she added, referring to the Dumont Dunes recreation area south of Tecopa.
