Nine Nye County high school basketball teams will play in the Pahrump Valley Times Trojans Cage Classic, which starts a three-day, 38-game run Thursday.

Entered, along with the host Pahrump Valley boys and girls varsity teams, are the Beatty boys and girls, the Tonopah girls, the Round Mountain boys and girls, and the Amargosa Valley Horizon Academy boys.

The Pahrump Valley Junior Varsity girls basketball team will play once, taking on Las Vegas Faith Lutheran's varsity at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Ninth Grade Academy gym.

The JVs are replacing Bishop, Calif., which cannot arrive before Friday, when the Lady Broncos will play at 2 p.m. Friday against Beatty and at 6:30 p.m. against Pahrump Valley.

The tournament will be played at the Ninth Grade Academy and at Rosemary Clarke Middle School this weekend. The Pahrump Valley High School main gym is in the midst of a major reconstruction project -- a project which could be completed in as little as two weeks or as many as eight weeks, according to reports.

First games for Nye teams are Thursday, including

Pahrump Valley girls, vs. Las Vegas Trinity Christian, 12:30 p.m., at Academy;

Pahrump Valley boys vs. Beatty boys, 2 p.m., at Academy;

Horizon Academy vs. Henderson International School, 5 p.m., at Academy;

Round Mountain boys vs. Las Vegas Bishop Gorman Junior Varsity, 8 p.m. at Academy;

Tonopah girls vs. Boulder City, 12:30 p.m., at Clarke;

Beatty girls vs. Round Mountain, 2 p.m., at Clarke;

Round Mountain girls vs. Bishop Gorman JVs, 6:30 p.m., at Clarke.

Pahrump Valley's girls, 5-0, are coming off a title run at the River Valley, Ariz., Pepsi Shootout, while the Trojan boys are 3-3. Their next start is tonight at Horizon Academy, with game time 6:30.

In other games involving Nye teams:

The PV girls JVs were 1-2 against varsity teams in the Lake Mead-Calvary Chapel Invitational tournament last weekend;

Beatty's boys, 0-2, lost 66-36 to Las Vegas Calvary Chapel and 49-45 to Horizon last week;

Round Mountain's boys lost 50-39 to Wells in NENOA tournament action at Elko;

Round Mountain lost 50-32 to Wells and 47-21 to West Wendover in girls' games;

Tonopah lost 44-31 to Wells in the NENOA tournament.

Round-robin games will be played Thursday and Friday. Teams will then be seeded for girls (1 through 10) and boys (1 through 6) bracket tournaments, to be played Saturday, starting at 8 a.m.

The Pahrump Valley varsity boys were 3-2 in the Lake Mead Invitational, played in Henderson. The Lonnie Shereck-coached Trojans defeated Huntington Beach, Calif., Liberty Christian 57-29; lost 47-45 to Las Vegas The Meadows; defeated Las Vegas Trinity 47-44, defeated Lincoln County 44-41 and lost in the title game to Lake Mead Christian Academy 69-33.

"Liberty had a 6-10 kid ... we shouldn't have lost to Meadows ... Lincoln County is considered one of the favorites to win the state 2-A titlem" said Shereck, whose team was to play Las Vegas Mountain View Christian Monday.

The Saints, however, did not have the game listed on their schedule. "We hope to reschedule that game," said Shereck.
