Pahrump Valley will be the opening game opponent for the Torrey Pines football team that is ranked No. 7 in the San Diego Union-Tribune's Top 10 preseason poll.

The Falcons were 9-2 in the 2006 season, finishing second to Carlsbad in the Palomar League. Carlsbad is the No. 1 team in those preseason ratings.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. for the game between the Nevada Class 3-A Trojans, who lost their opener, 24-20, at Phoenix, Ariz., Christian last week.

In other games involving Nye County teams this weekend, it's Beatty, 0-1, at home against Las Vegas Calvary Chapel, 0-0, and Round Mountain, 0-1, hosting Carlin, 1-0 tonight, and Tonopah, 1-0, going Saturday to Las Vegas Mountain View Christian, 1-0. Kickoff for the last game is at 1 p.m.

"Torrey Pines is a good football team," said Brian Hug, the Trojans' second-year coach. "They've lost a lot of players off last year's team, so they are rebuilding ... and it's their first game."

Torrey Pines, with Scott Ashby as its first-year coach, uses the wing-T offense that generated 33.8 points per game in the 2006 season. The Falcons allowed almost 18 points per game.

In the loss to Phoenix Christian, the Trojans had six interceptions, with Zack Winn and Kyle Abreu each returning one for a touchdown. But the pass defense surrendered 197 yards and two TD passes, including the game-winning midway through the fourth quarter.

Offensively, the Trojans were led by quarterback Nick Murphy, who "for a sophomore, made a few mistakes, but also made some great choices," said Hug. "If I had go give him a grade, it would be a 'B'," which is better than some other elements fared.

"The running backs got a 'C' ... sometimes they ran to the wrong holes," said Hug. The offensive line "had a lack of finishing off the plays or missed assignments," so got a 'C.'

Except for the secondary getting a 'B,", none of the defensive categories passed, and the coaching staff itself was given a 'C'. "I made a couple bad calls defensively, and offensively, we had to have better play-calling," said Hug.

Pahrump Valley is at Chino, Calif., Don Lugo next Friday, before returning to its home field to battle Spring Creek Sept. 14.
