Brandon Smith, a 19-year-old motorcycle racer from Hesperia, Calif., died as the result of an accident Friday. He was competing in the Best in the Desert-sanctioned Vegas-to-Reno Off-Road race when the accident occurred at 4 p.m. near pit 10 at Redlich.

According to a report released by race director, Casey Folks, Tuesday on the Best in the Desert Web site (www.bitd.com). Smith died from injuries sustained in a solo accident during the running of the race.

"He was thrown from his bike and impacted the terrain," said Folks. "My thanks go to John Gaughan, who arranged to have the helicopter proving support for the TSCO team dispatched to the scene.

"Medical care reached Brandon in a short time," reported Folks. "Unfortunately, he died at the scene of the accident."

Smith was a member of a Hesperia-based Honda team that included Kurt Carlson, 44, and Craig Carlson, 21.

The viewing will be today, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., in the Kern Mortuary in Hesperia. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Apple Valley, Calif., at 10 a.m. Saturday.

A tribute to Brandon will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Elks Lodge in Hesperia. In lieu of flowers, it has been requested by his parents that donations be made to the Brandon E. Smith Memorial Scholarship, in care of the Victor Valley College District Foundation, 18422 Bear Valley Rd., Victorville, Calif., 92395.
