Jet skiers show off skills at Lakeside

Hot weather, big crowds, and intense competition marked jet ski racing on the 6.5-acre pond at Terrible's Lakeside Casino and Resort this past weekend.

The Las Vegas PWC (Personal Water Craft) Association and Western States Cup championships were at stake in the two-day marathon event at Lakeside.

Ducks, forced out of the water by the action, joined several hundred fans -- most of them snowbirds and vacationers camped out in the RV park -- in watching almost continuous racing both Saturday and Sunday.

The APBA Supercourse Nationals will be contested Sept. 15-16 at Lake Dallas, Texas, so last weekend's events were some of the final tuneups for several of the racers planning to compete in that event. The winners Saturday in PWC events included:

Ron Haigwood of Pahrump was 10th in the novice ski stock race Saturday, riding a Kawasaki. He was the only valley competitor listed among the finishers, either day.
