A 9-year-old boy was attacked by a stray dog at approximately 7:30 a.m. Monday, according to Mike Gray, Nye County Animal Control officer.

The child, who was transported to Las Vegas with what Gray called "pretty severe lacerations," was waiting at a school bus stop on McMurray Drive and Lola Lane.

Gray said the dog appeared to be a pit bull mix, with a majority of pit bull apparent.

When he arrived on the scene, Gray said, he had to chase the dog to its nearby residence.

The owner of the dog reportedly said the dog was a stray that just showed up on her doorstep.

As such, little about the dog's training or background is known.

The dog is in custody at the Nye County Animal Shelter under a 10-day quarantine order.
