IN VOLLEYBALL, FOOTBALL Beatty faces tough tests in 1-A Laughlin
By DON McDERMOTT
BEATTY -- The Beatty High School football and volleyball teams will learn right away how good they are -- or how good they will have to get -- in the 2007 Nevada Class A seasons for each sport. Laughlin, one of the top teams in the Southern Division, will visit the Hornets, out of the Central Division, for opening action of the season. Volleyball begins at 3 p.m., with the football game at 7 p.m. The Beatty football schedule, incidentally, has been revised, according to athletics director Dale Lerbakken. The schedule: Aug. 31, home vs. Las Vegas Calvary Chapel, 7 p.m. Sept. 7, at Lund, 1 p.m.; Sept. 15, home vs. Sandy Valley, 1 p.m. Sept. 28, at Lund, 3 p.m. Oct. 5, at Indian Springs, 7 p.m.; Oct. 12, home vs. Round Mountain (Homecoming), 7 p.m.; Oct. 19, home vs. Tonopah, 7 p.m. Oct. 25, home vs. Spring Mountain, 7 p.m. In volleyball, coach Mike Duszynski has 17 players listed on the varsity roster, including Markie Cohan, Naomi Cruz, Heather Dunsterville, Idhaly Flores, Alejandra Gonzalez, Danielle Henderson, Jennifer Porte, Chricel Rankin, Alyssa Regalado, Karli Rust, Kacilyn Schroeder, Ariel Spicer, Autumn Spicer, Nichole Stucker, Kaitlin Ulrich, and Crystal Williams. Seeking varsity spots are Britney Caskey, Heather Caskey, Jessica Cotrill, Rachel Gaitan, Sara Gray, Diana Maldonado, Maria Martinez, Lisette Mendez, Amanda Revert, Emily Salisbury, Maya Gonzalez, and Emma Frias. Beatty will compete next Friday and Saturday in the Pahrump Valley tournament. Coach Gus Sullivan's football team wants to contend for a playoff berth this fall, so playing Laughlin will be a prime indicator of how successful the Hornets will be. Laughlin has been a playoff team twice in the last three years; in 2005, the southern Nevada team upset Tonopah 64-40 in the first round. On the roster for the opener are running back/defensive end Miguel Mendoza; LB/DE Kyle Shubert; QB/RB Trever Hughes; TE/DE David Tom; QB/LB Kyle Marchand, and TE/OLB Ramiro Hernandez. Also, QB/RB/K Anthony Turner; G/LB Daniel Frias; RB/QB/S Joe Serrano; G/T Matthew Kearns; TE/DE Tony Dare; G/DE Jorge Avila; RB/OLB Miguel Arroyo; G/T Tanner Davis; G/T/LB David Moreno; C/LB Josh Britton; G/T Jeremy Peden, and G/T Jacob Carroll. Also, G/T Eddie Maldonado; RB/S Jose Mendoza; TE/DE Jacob Sumpter; TE/OLB Mario Roman, and C/G Matthew Chaney. Sullivan, in his second year as coach, will be assisted by Frank Jarvis, Bob Serrano, and Chuck Davis. |
