LEGION WORLD SERIES IN OKLAHOMA

Saturday a big day for Little Leaguers

The Williamsport, Pa., Little League baseball World Series is to conclude with the International and United States championship games Saturday and the title showdown Sunday.

All three games will be televised on ABC, starting at 9:30 a.m. (PT) Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

In the semifinals Thursday were Venezuela, Curacao, Japan and Taiwan, along with Lubbock, Texas; Lake Oswego, Ore.; Warner Robins, Ga., and Chandler, Ariz.

Tucson, Ariz., defeated Merced, Calif., 9-6, and Kearns, Utah, 13-3, to win the American Legion West regionals at Kearns.

Tucson stopped Albuquerque, N.M., 20-0; lost 6-4 to Kearns, then outslugged Pearl City, Hawaii, 20-13, and Las Vegas Bishop Gorman 18-13 to advance to the championship round.

Gorman, the Nevada champion, defeated Magna, Utah, 17-6, and Louisville, Colo., 10-0, before bowing 13-11 to Kearns and 18-13 to Tucson. Gorman finished 57-22.

The American Legion World Series will be played today through at Doenges Memorial Stadium in Bartlesville, Okla. Teams representing the Northeast, Northwest, Central Plains, Western, Southeast, Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, and Mid-South regionals will compete in the double-elimination tournament.

First-day pairings are:

-- Branford, Conn., 31-8, vs. Bellingham, Wash., 64-6;

-- Eden Prairie, Minn., 41-9, vs. Tucson, 35-10;

-- Columbia, Tenn., 53-10, vs. Rockport, Ind., 29-8, and

-- Boyertown, Pa., 52-8, vs. Bryant, Ark., 41-9.

The championship game will be played at 1 p.m. (CT) Tuesday.

Cartersville, Ga., defeated Falcon, Venezuela, 9-0 to win the Senior Division Little League World Series at Bangor, Maine.

Georgia defeated Surrey, B.C., Canada, 10-0; lost 12-4 to Maine; defeated Bangor, 11-1, lost 5-0 to Hilo, Hawaii, and beat Tyler, Texas, 4-1, to get to the finals.

In the Junior Division Little League World Series at Taylor, Mich., the West, represented by Pearl City, Hawaii, defeated Asia Pacific (Makati City, Philippines) 6-2 in the title game.

Pearl City defeated Laredo, Texas, 3-0; Anderson, S.C., 5-0; Middletown, N.J., 3-2; Glendale, Wis., 9-0, and Laredo again, 4-1, to advance to the finals.

In the Big League Division of Little League baseball, South Carolina, represented by Easley, downed Puerto Rico 11-3 in the championship game, at Easley.

Las Vegas Rancho, out of the American Legion Silver Division, was 2-2 in the Division II Central Plains regional tournament at Beulah, N.D.

The Rams lost 5-1 to Clintonville, Wis.; defeated LaMoure, N.D., 9-5; defeated Beulah, 6-1, and lost 5-3 to Clintonville.
