Homeland Reserve Unit

VHRU is an organized group of retired and former law enforcement officers with the mission of providing trained and experienced resources to public safety agencies in Nevada and, potentially, to surrounding areas.

VHRU maintains a web site that describes the mission and provides information regarding the organization, leadership, and on-going activities. The web site also contains an application form that can be downloaded by any former law enforcement officer who wants to become a part of the organization.

Charity golf tournament

The Rural Health Care Foundation is having its sixth annual charity golf tournament. The event is sponsored on behalf of rural health care to include Central Valley Medical Center, Allen Memorial Hospital and Desert View Regional Medical Center.

The event will again be an 18-hole four person scramble to be held at Gladstan Golf Course, located in Payson, Utah. This fun event will be held on Sept. 13 with a Shotgun start at 8 a.m.

We look forward to your participation as a sponsor. Sponsor fees have been set to encourage greater participation. All proceeds will be used to support all health care services and activities in rural communities.

Format: four player scramble

Prizes awarded for first, second, and third player.

Closest to the hole, longest drive, and longest putt contests.

Registration fees are $75 per golfer or $300 per team. Only paid entries are guaranteed. Registration deadline, Aug. 20.

Fees include: green fees and cart, breakfast and lunch, tee prizes, contest prizes, and team awards.

NWTRB to meet in September

The U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board will meet in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

The Board is charged with performing an independent review of the technical and scientific validity of U.S. Department of Energy activities related to implementing the Nuclear Waste Policy Act. Such activities include characterizing the proposed repository site for disposing of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste at Yucca Mountain, and packaging and transporting the waste.

The focus of the meeting, which will be open to the public, will be repository surface facility designs and other operations; other technical issues also may be discussed.

Final meeting agenda will be posted on the Board web site (www.nwtrb.gov), or by telephone request approximately one week before the meeting.

The meeting will begin at 8 a.m., at the Atrium Suites Hotel; 4255 S. Paradise Road in Las Vegas. Contact numbers are (tel) 702-369-4400; (res) 866-404-5286, and (fax) 702-369-4330.

Time will be set aside at the end of the day for public comment. Those wanting to speak should sign the Public Comment register upon arrival. Written comments may be submitted for the record.

Government loan seminar

Chateau Homes and USDA invite the public to attend an information seminar on a government loan program allowing purchase of a home with no money down and interest as low as one percent.

The meeting will be at the Bob Rudd Center, 10 a.m., Sept. 6.

Kiwanis Wine Tasting/Auction

The Kiwanis is having the Annual Wine Tasting and Auction at Saddle West Hotel and Casino 6 p.m., Sept. 22.

Jewelry sale and tea

Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 650 S. Blagg, will hold a gently used jewelry sale 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 13. All proceeds going to No To Abuse and matched by a grant from Thrivent Financial.

Pahrump Valley's Victorian Ladies will be in period dresses serving tea during the jewelry sale.

Donations of gently used jewelry are still being accepted at No To Abuse, 641 S. Blagg Road and Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church.

United Way Luau

The United Way of Pioneer Territory is holding the Sixth Annual Luau from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., Sat., Aug. 25 at Honeysuckle Park.

The menu will be traditional Hawaiian featuring Kalua pig, chicken long rice, steamed rice, salad and Huapia. The cost is $6. Hot dogs will be available for the kids. Mai Tais, beer, soft drinks and water will be on sale throughout the evening.

Live Hawaiian entertainment starts at 7 p.m. with the Patessa Wong Band and Dance Troupe and other entertainment features the torch lighting and traditional fire dancers.

Bring chairs and enjoy a relaxed evening in Polynesian style.

Obama meeting and caucus

The Barack Obama Campaign Staff will host a Pahrump organizational meeting and Mock Caucus in preparation for the Democratic caucuses on January 19, 2008.

Anyone interested in attending next year's presidential caucuses is invited to come and hear about the changes to Nevada's presidential primary system, to participate in a mock caucus, and to learn about the growing grassroots movement for Barack Obama in Pahrump and across Nevada.

Local gospel vocalist Mrs. Wanda Cotton will also be performing during the event

The meeting will take place 6 p.m., Aug. 28 at the Charleston Peak RV Resort at the Winery.

Nye County School District has new forms for parents who intend to home school their children.

Forms can be picked up 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 484 S. West Street (modulars).

Family to Family August calendar

The August class schedule for Family to Family Connection, 160 S. Emery, is as follows:

Aug. 24 -- Nevada Early Intervention Services explore and learn play group, 11 a.m.

Aug. 31 -- Infant and child CPR class at 1 p.m., for families with small children. Registrations required.

The ABCs of Parenting class is at 3 p.m. every Wednesday (parents with children birth to 5 years old). Play group is at 1 p.m. every Thursday (except Aug. 16). Resource Lending Library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Poetry and coffee

Contemporary worship service

Saved by Grace Luthern Church invites everyone to its first contemporary worship service at 11 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 26. The contemporary worship group called "Grateful", from Las Vegas, will be doing the musical portion of the service and Pastor Lois Shuart will lead the rest.

This service will be immediately following the traditional service of Sun. at 10 a.m.

Free Movie Day

Pahrump Community Library presents Free Movie Day, Saturday, Aug. 25, at 2 p.m. August's feature is "The Last Mimsy" (rated PG). Admission is free. Parents of children under 10 must remain in the library during viewing.

Faith Formation classes

Pre-registration for Faith Formation classes at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church will be held after all masses the week of Aug. 25 and 26.

Cost is $30 per child or $75 per family.

There will be a mandatory meeting for all registered participants from 10:25 a.m. until 11:55 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9 in the Parish Hall to explain the new format.

Wal-Mart Wall of Heros

The Wall of Heroes is ready to start at the south entrance. If you have a picture of someone who has served or is serving in the military, and would like a picture displayed on the wall, bring an 8 x 10 photo with the first and last name, branch of service, dates of service, and phone number. Add $2 for the frame and drop all the information at the customer service desk.

Free vision screenings

During the month of August, Dr. George D. Leaks is offering free vision screenings for children ages five through 18. These screenings will not result in a spectacle prescription. However, they will determine if a comprehensive eye exam should be scheduled.

Appointments are available and will be seen first, but walk-ins will be accepted. Call 727-8300 to schedule an appointment for your child. The clinic is located at 2120 E. Calvada Blvd.

Compassionate Care for Women

Compassionate Care for Women will host a free "meet and greet" from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tues., Aug. 28, to provide an opportunity for the community to meet the company medical staff and welcome their newest member to the team. The "meet and greet" will be held at the offices, 1480 E. Calvada Blvd.
