Young Mormons help local seniors
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
When Maxine Moffett-Taylor, an elderly disabled citizen, told her neighbors she needed help around the house because it's hard for her to stand with her back problems, she didn't expect to receive so much, and from young people at that. She was even more surprised to learn she was being helped by elders from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. "I had no idea (the neighbors) were even Mormons," Moffett-Taylor said. But the next thing she knew, Elders Justin Hamilton, 21, and Elder Brian Autry, 22, were showing up at her house every week and helping her out. They raked the outside of her house, cleaned the patio, raked up old tree limbs and helped clean out her garage. "Every week they have been faithfully returning and not even asking for anything," Moffett-Taylor said. She said she asked them how much she would have to pay for their help, but was quickly told nothing. Moffett-Taylor admitted that although she is a Christian, and as she described herself, "strong in my faith," she used to have some negative feelings about Mormons. But all that's changed now. "I learned not to pre-judge," she said. "They haven't been demanding about coming to their church. I've had some invitations, but they were just that, invitations." She was also pleasantly surprised to see young people so willing to lend a helping hand. "I just found that these young people -- that they would give up their summer -- I found that extraordinary," she said. Hamilton said he's enjoyed helping Moffett-Taylor and her husband as well. "It's been a great experience getting to know them and learn more about their Christian background," Hamilton said. "One of the great things about being a missionary is that you get to meet people of all backgrounds." |
