Local teacher faces child porn charges
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
Michael Gogerty, 41, a fifth-grade teacher at Hafen Elementary school, appeared in federal court in Las Vegas last Thursday on charges of possessing and receiving child pornography over the Internet. Gogerty, who lives in Las Vegas, was reportedly deemed a threat to the community by the judge and ordered to remain in custody. The school district has reportedly suspended Gogerty without pay. Gogerty's arrest Thursday morning by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers reportedly came after the ICE investigated a tip from the Toronto Police Services Sex Crime Unit. The Canadian law-enforcement agency alerted ICE to a video of child pornographyposted on "yousendit.com," an Internet site. The Internet provider gave officers subscriber information, including the location of Gogerty's residence in Las Vegas. The alleged sex offender submitted to a consensual search of the residence, where officers said they found numerous images and video files of child pornography on his computer. In addition, more than 200 CDs and floppy disks were found which Gogerty said contained images of prepubescent minors engaged in illicit sexual conduct. Further investigation revealed more than 250 files on Gogerty's computer with names indicating child pornography. Gogerty's arrest is just part of an ICE initiative, Operation Predator, which began in 2003 to deport foreign national sexual predators, and locally identify, investigate, and arrest sexual predators. In the two years since its inception, the initiative has resulted in 10,000 national arrests, including 85 in Nevada. |
