BLM puts Nye Co. on hold

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is putting applications outside Clark County on hold until Oct. 1 due to budget constraints.

The budget crunch however hasn't stopped work on the land withdrawal for the Pahrump Airport and the sale of land for the Desert Space Museum project at Lathrop Wells, BLM spokeswoman Kirstin Cannon said.

The BLM Las Vegas district asked for and received $48,000 from the state office as an emergency appropriation. That was used to set priorities until the start of the new fiscal year in less than six weeks, she said.

"Everything now has been on hold for a month and it's going to be on hold until after Oct. 1st," Nye County consultant Mary Ellen Giampaoli said.

Giampaoli said the BLM is only processing requests for recreation and public purpose leases, which generate revenue for the bureau.

Cannon said the BLM has about 30 applications pending from Nye County.

Nye County commissioners discussed the BLM budget crunch during a meeting of the road commission Aug. 7.

"The only budget money they have left is to process rights of way applications in Nye County. As a result there will be no action taken as I'm informed, on any outstanding Nye County work until the beginning of the next fiscal year, which is Oct. 1st," said Commissioner Joni Eastley, a member of the BLM resource advisory council.

Nye County officials were encouraged to complain to the state BLM office, Public Works Director Samson Yao said.
