Reno stadium possible?THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
RENO -- Reno planning commissioners are scheduled to consider permits for two proposed sites for a minor league baseball stadium. One is in downtown Reno on Evans Avenue. The other is at the Grand Sierra Resort. SK Baseball has applied for special-use permits to build a Triple-A stadium at both 10-acre sites. It faces an Oct. 1 deadline to have an approved location to take advantage of a countywide 2 percent car rental tax that would help pay for the stadium. While more detailed studies for water, sewer and parking are to come, the plans submitted are for a $35 million to $45 million stadium seating 6,500 people and providing space for another 3,500 on the lawn. "Right now, both sites are in play,'' said Alfredo Alonso, a Reno lobbyist representing the partnerships involved in the project. "Obviously, a decision is going to have to be made in the next few weeks.'' SK Baseball is owned by New York City father and son, Jerry and Stuart Katzoff, and Indiana Pacers co-owner Herb Simon. The group intends to buy the Tucson Sidewinders, an affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks of the National League, and move the club to Reno. |
