Republican fashion show

The Pahrump Valley Republican Women will be holding their annual fashion show at 1 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Pahrump Nugget.

Immunization clinic

The Nevada State Health Division will hold a walk-in immunization clinic for school from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 20, and from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 21, at the Pahrump Community Health Office, 250 N. Highway 160, Suite 6. Bring your child's immunization records.

Free Movie Day

Pahrump Community Library presents Free Movie Day, Saturday, Aug. 25, at 2 p.m. August's feature is "The Last Mimsy" (rated PG). Admission is free. Parents of children under 10 must remain in the library during viewing.

Pahrump Open Schooling shows will be held at 9 a.m. Oct. 13 and Nov. 3 at McCullough Arena (corner of Highway 160 and Basin Road).

Tutors needed for Pathways

The Pathways program needs tutors in mathematics. In addition, tutors are needed for language arts in the areas of grammar and vocabulary.

A willingness to work with middle- to high school-aged students is a must.

Free vision screenings

During the month of August, Dr. George D. Leaks is offering free vision screenings for children ages five through 18.

These screenings will not result in a spectacle prescription. However, they will determine if a comprehensive eye exam should be scheduled.

Appointments are available and will be seen first, but walk-ins will be accepted.

American Cancer Society Relay for Life

The Pahrump Valley Relay for Life will be held from 6 p.m. Aug. 18 to 6 a.m. Aug. 19 at Petrack Park. Teams from area companies, organizations and neighborhoods will raise money to support the fight against cancer.

Aglow meets Aug. 18

Women entrepreneur group forming

A support group is forming for women who either own a business in Pahrump or are interested in starting one. The group will meet one night a week in the evening as determined. If interested call Lee at 727-1459.

Manse Elementary registration

The Manse Elementary School registration for the 2007-08 school year for kindergarten and all new students will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning Aug. 6. The school is located at 1020 E. Wilson Road. Call 727-5252 for more information.

Exchange students host homes needed

DM Discoveries, a government-monitored exchange student program, is seeking host families in Nye County and the surrounding areas for foreign exchange students due to arrive in August for the 2007-08 school year.

Each student has full medical coverage, pocket money and has expressed a true desire to become a participating member of an American family - pitching in on everything from household chores to family discussions.

Quilts 4 Cancer

Quilts 4 Cancer, a 501C3 charity, needs financial sponsors. Funding is needed to continue giving cancer comfort quilts to those in the area (not Las Vegas).

In Nye and Esmeralda counties, many residents are being treated for cancer. Some of the current wish list includes material for tops, rotary blades, backing, etc.

VA van

A van is available to veterans needing transportation to the Veterans Administration Clinic in Pahrump.

The van operates from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

High Desert Bead & Fiber Artists

The High Desert Bead & Fiber Artists Society for adults meets every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Seemore's Ice Cream Parlor on Highway 160.

All adults interested in learning beading will be welcome.

Card players wanted

Hand and foot canasta is played about once every three weeks at 10 a.m. at the Elks Club. Card players and newcomers are welcome to participate.

"Pahrump Bike Night" will be held during the summer, starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Saturday nights at Sonic. All are welcome, bike or no bike.

NWTRB to meet in September

The U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board will meet in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

The Board is charged with performing an independent review of the technical and scientific validity of U.S. Department of Energy activities related to implementing the Nuclear Waste Policy Act. Such activities include characterizing the proposed repository site for disposing of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste at Yucca Mountain, and packaging and transporting the waste.

The focus of the meeting, which will be open to the public, will be repository surface facility designs and other operations; other technical issues also may be discussed.

Final meeting agenda will be posted on the Board web site (www.nwtrb.gov), or by telephone request approximately one week before the meeting.

The meeting will begin at 8 a.m., at the Atrium Suites Hotel; 4255 S. Paradise Road in Las Vegas. Contact numbers are (tel) 702-369-4400; (res) 866-404-5286, and (fax) 702-369-4330.

Time will be set aside at the end of the day for public comment. Those wanting to speak should sign the Public Comment register upon arrival. Written comments may be submitted for the record.

9-Ball league forming

The first meeting for the Pahrump fall 9-Ball League will be 1 p.m., Aug. 19 at the Town Hall Bar. Sponsorship fees will be due at the meeting. All teams should have a representative present.

PVHS open house

Pahrump Valley High School will hold an open house from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., Aug. 28.

Ms. Senior Nevada Pageant

The Ms. Senior Nevada Pageant will be held at the Sun Coast Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas on Aug. 29.

Faith formation classes

Pre-registration for faith formation classes at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church will be held after mass the weekend of Aug. 25 and 26. Cost is $30 per child or $75 per family. Wellness forum

Ancient Secrets Metaphysical Book Store and Universal Wisdom Church announce the wellness options forum scheduled 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 18, at the Bob Rudd Community Center.

The forum is a gathering of spiritual-minded people interested in healing mother earth and the people of Pahrump.

Nathan Adelson volunteer training

Nathan Adelson Hospice has scheduled a volunteer training class. For those who feel that giving back to the community is important to being a part of the community, this is just the thing.

Volunteer training classes are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 20-21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Nathan Adelson Hospice office at 1480 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 900. As the only non-profit hospice program in Southern Nevada volunteers are an integral part of the success of the operation.

Wal-Mart Wall of Heros

The Wall of Heroes is ready to start at the south entrance. If you have a picture of someone who has served, or is serving in the military, and would like a picture displayed on the wall, bring an 8 x 10 photo with the first and last name, branch of service, dates of service, and phone number. Add $2 for the frame and drop all the information at the customer service desk.

Animal shelter needs volunteers

The Nye County Animal Shelter is seeking volunteers to work either at the shelter or in the spay/neuter clinic. People who love animals and who want to learn new skills should stop by the Nye County Animal Shelter at 171 N. Kittyhawk Dr., or call 751-7020.

August family night

The Nye Communities Coalition, in partnership with St. Martin's in the Desert Episcopal Church, is hosting a family night at the Pahrump town pool 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 19. Families (children accompanied by a parent or adult guardian) are invited to an evening of free swimming, food and fun. This is an alcohol, tobacco, and drug-free event. Family to Family August calendar

The August class schedule for Family to Family Connection, 160 S. Emery, is as follows:

Aug. 21 -- Teen parenting class, 2-4 p.m.

Aug. 24 -- Nevada Early Intervention Services explore and learn play group, 11 a.m.

Aug. 31 -- Infant and child CPR class at 1 p.m., for families with small children. Registrations required.

The ABCs of Parenting class is at 3 p.m. every Wednesday (parents with children birth to 5 years old). Play group is at 1 p.m. every Thursday (except Aug. 16). Resource Lending Library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

First Step yard sale

The First Step Club, Pahrump's only nonprofit recovery club, is having their annual yard sale from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 17, 18 and 19. There will be handmade jewelry and other craft items for sale.

Cash donations or items for the sale are still needed.

The club provides crucial support and information regarding alcohol, drug or any other addiction, and asks for community help in keeping the doors open.

Mt. Charleston enrollment

Mt. Charleston Elementary School will be registering new students for the 2007-08 school year starting 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Aug. 6. The office will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 9, for training. Bring proof of residency (electric bill, rent receipt, builder permit, etc.), original birth certificate, original immunization record (hepatitis A and B are state required), and social security card for copying. In order for a child to start kindergarten, the child must turn 5 years old by September 30, 2007.

Class lists with teacher name and room number will be posted outside the school office after 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17.

School begins Tuesday, Aug. 21, for grades 1 through 5, and Monday, Aug. 27, for kindergarten. Supply lists for all grades K-5, are available at the local businesses. Call 727-7892 for more information.

Kindergarten pre-assessment

Kindergarten students will be pre-assesed starting Tuesday Aug. 21, through Thursday Aug. 23. Assessment times will be assigned during registration. An orientation will take place at 9 a.m., Friday Aug. 24, in the multi-purpose room.

Kindergarten begins Monday, Aug. 27.

Artistic Centre registration

The Artistic Centre will hold registration for fall classes Monday, Aug.13, through Friday, Aug. 17, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Classes are available in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, hip hop, combo, gymnastics, acting and singing for students 3 to 18 years of age.

Low-cost vaccinations

SNAPS has been created in Pahrump as a solution to stop the killing of unwanted animals and offers low cost vaccinations, spaying and neutering of cats and dogs. Humane traps are available if needed.

SNAPS' next vaccination clinic will be held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 19, at the Comstock Park pool house.

Women's defense class

The Nye County Sheriff Department in parnership with the community and Homeland Heros will present a two-day women's defense class.

The class is held at the VFW Post 10054, 4651 Homestead Road, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 10 and 11.

This is a no onsense self defense course taught by Nye County law enforcement officers and includes techniques on awareness of your surroundings; what to do when surprised by an attacker; what not to do or what to do when attacked; and how to neutralize an attacker.

The class is free to any woman wanting to learn self protection. Attendance is required both days.

Charity golf tournament

The Rural Health Care Foundation is having its sixth annual charity golf tournament. The event is sponsored on behalf of rural health care to include Central Valley Medical Center, Allen Memorial Hospital and Desert View Regional Medical Center.

The event will again be an 18-hole four person scramble to be held at Gladstan Golf Course, located in Payson, Utah. This fun event will be held on Sept. 13 with a Shotgun start at 8 a.m.

We look forward to your participation as a sponsor. Sponsor fees have been set to encourage greater participation. All proceeds will be used to support all health care services and activities in rural communities.

Format: four player scramble

Prizes awarded for first, second, and third player.

Closest to the hole, longest drive, and longest putt contests.

Registration fees are $75 per golfer or $300 per team. Only paid entries are guaranteed. Registration deadline, Aug. 20.

Fees include: green fees and cart, breakfast and lunch, tee prizes, contest prizes, and team awards.

School dress code

The following dress code has been instituted for Pahrump Valley High School. Student attire should be modest in nature. Clothing that bears slogans which are sexually suggestive, promote or suggest the use of drugs, contain vulgar language or ethnic/racial slurs or any other word or image deemed inappropriate by the administration will not be permitted.

A complete list of items deemed "inappropriate" is available at the school. Students found in violation of the dress code may be asked to turn shirts inside out, call home for acceptable clothing, or be sent to in-house for the day.

The administration will have the discretion to determine the appropriateness of school attire.
