Joel Cardenas, 36, was arrested and booked on a charge of sexual assault early this month.

Cardenas' arrest came after a 22-year-old female went to the Sheriff's Office Aug. 1 to report having been assaulted.

The victim reportedly stated a group of friends had gone out drinking and, upon returning to her friend's house in the early morning hours to sleep, Cardenas assaulted her.

Members of the Street Crime Unit made contact with Cardenas, who voluntarily went to the sheriff's department to be interviewed.

The suspect denied that he sexually assaulted the victim and told Dep. Alexandra MacNeil that he and the victim "had kissed and touched consensually."

Cardenas then volunteered to have a computer voice stress analyzer (CVSA, a device that may indicate the truthfulness of spoken words) test conducted.

He failed the test, Dep.'s Joe Close and Mark Cannon then interviewed him.

At that point, Cardenas reportedly "admitted to penetrating the victim digitally."

He was arrested and booked on the sexual assault charge and is being held on $50,000 bail.
