Marion working on fall program

Doug Marion, the baseball coach at Pahrump Valley High School, is working to form a fall team that will include future Trojan players.

"We want to have the boys who are not on sports teams, but play baseball, have some games this fall," said Marion. "We'll be making some announcements soon."

Pahrump Valley's spring team was 17-19-2 and lost 6-1 to Las Vegas Faith Lutheran in the Nevada Class 3-A state title game. In the summer, the Senior Division Little League team was 14-6, after going 1-3 in the West regionals at Salem, Ore.

The American Legion Silver Division Trojans were 16-9 in all games, giving Pahrump Valley players a combined 2007 record of 47-34-2.

The Senior Division World Series is underway at Bangor, Maine. West champion Hilo, Hawaii, defeated Saipan, the Asia-Pacific winner, 17-2, Sunday, and Cartersville, Ga., 5-0 Monday. Tuesday, Hawaii took on Surrey, British Columbia., and Thursday, Hilo will face a host Bangor team.

Freehold Township, N.J., and Tyler, Texas, are 2-0 in the tournament, which includes Lithuania and Venezuela.

The Junior Division World Series, at Taylor, Mich., includes West champion Pearl City, Hawaii, along with Middletown, N.J.; Anderson, S.C.; Glendale, Wis.; Laredo, Texas; Makati City, Philippines; Guayama, Puerto Rico; the Ukraine; U.S. Virgin Islands, and Surrey, B.C.

The tournament ends Saturday.

The Williamsport, Pa.-based Little League World Series starts Friday and concludes Aug. 26, with 16 teams entered.

In Pool A are Walpole, Mass.; Lake Oswego, Ore.; Warner-Robins, Ga., and Hamilton, Ohio. In Pool B are Salisbury, Md.; Chandler, Ariz.; Lubbock, Texas, and Coon Rapids, Minn.

Pool C has Willemstad, Curacao; Tokyo; White Rock, B.C., and Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. In Pool D are Mexicali, Baja California; Taichung, Chinese Taipei; Apeldoorn, Netherlands, and Maracibo, Venezuela.

ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN360.com and ABC will televise all of the games. The world championship game is at 12:30 p.m. PT, Aug. 26.

South Carolina stopped Puerto Rico 11-3 to win the Big League Division title in Little League baseball. The tournament was played at Easley, S.C., with 11 teams entered. California, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mexico, Saipan, British Columbia, and the Republic of Georgia were represented in the tournament.

The Satchel Paige Baseball Team is looking for youth and high school players ages 13-15 and 16-19 who would like to be a part of the 2007 Christmas Baseball Tour in the Dominican Republic Dec.26-Jan. 6.
