The Pahrump Valley volleyball team, coached by Amy Braach-Hart, above, and the Lady Trojans' girls' soccer team, below, had huge turnouts on the first day of fall sports drills Monday. Greg Leseberg is the girls' coach for the first time.

Amy Braach-Hart must have felt like the Pied Piper, when she walked into the first Pahrump Valley High School volleyball practice she would direct as coach.

There were 43 girls eligible to compete on the first day of workouts; another six didn't have their paper work completed and will have to wait until it is cleared.

Braach-Hart, who coached volleyball at Rosemary Clarke Middle School, succeeded Richard Barker, who left after one season as the PVHS coach.

Greg Leseberg may have had the same feeling, when the Lady Trojans' soccer team showed up for its first workout on a hot and humid Monday afternoon. Leseberg was once an assistant to former boys' coach C.J. Johnson.

There were more than 40 girls on the field; how many will endure preseason workouts outdoors is a prime concern at the moment for Leseberg, in his first season as the girls' coach. He replaced Steve Coleman as coach.

Andy Andersen had 12 girls and boys at the first practice by the PVHS cross country team. Andersen is in his second season as the harriers' coach.

The boys' soccer team went through a spirited drill on its second workout of the day Monday afternoon. Gene Smith is the Trojans' coach for the second straight year.

The girls' golf team, two-time defending Nevada Class 3-A champion, held its first practice Monday morning at Mountain Falls, under the direction of veteran coach Julie Floyd.

The volleyball team will open its season Aug. 24 in the always tough Las Vegas Invitational, which will conclude Aug. 25. Pairings and times will be announced.

Pahrump Valley will host its own invitational Aug. 31-Sept. 1, with Beatty and Tonopah entered, along with Las Vegas Calvary Chapel, Faith Lutheran, Lake Mead Christian Academy, Mountain View Christian, Pahranagat Valley Alamo, The Meadows, and Trinity Christian. Pairings and times will be announced.

The girls' soccer campaign begins at home Aug. 30, with a non-league game against Mesquite Virgin Valley. The Southern league season starts Sept. 13 at Overton Moapa Valley.

Cross country competition starts Aug. 28 with the Trojans competing in the Spring Valley Jamboree in Las Vegas. The Trojans have a home meet Sept. 4 with Lakeview Executive Golf course the site.

Virgin Valley will visit Aug. 30 for a non-league boys' soccer game, starting at 2:30 p.m. The Southern 3-A boys' soccer league will include 1-A Lake Mead Christian Academy, as well as 2-A Ely White Pine and The Meadows this season. Boulder City, Virgin Valley, Moapa Valley, and Faith Lutheran are back as league members.

Girls golf in the Southern League begins Aug. 23 at Mountain Falls. Tee times start at 11 a.m.
