LEGION BASEBALL Gorman qualifies for West regionalsPVT
Las Vegas Bishop Gorman -- the Southern Nevada Titans -- advanced to the American Legion Baseball Western Regionals, which start Thursday at Kearns, Utah. A 4-3 win against Henderson Coronado in the state finals at UNLV Saturday moved the Gaels into a first-round game against the host Kearns legion team at 7 p.m. (MT) Thursday. Bishop Gorman, 55-20, claimed its second straight Legion championship and has now won four titles over the last two years. In both 2006 and this year, the Gaels won the Nevada Class 4-A high school and Legion state titles. In other first-day action Thursday, it will be New Mexico vs. Arizona at 9 a.m.; Hawaii vs. Colorado at noon, and California vs. Utah at 4 p.m. Games will be played at the same times Friday; at 9 a.m., noon and 7 p.m. Saturday; 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday, and 1 p.m. Monday. If necessary, the title game is at 7 p.m. Monday. The Western champion advances to the American Legion World Series, to be played Aug. 24-28 at Doenges Memorial Stadium in Bartlesville, Okla. The Western champion will take on the Central Plains winner in the second game of a doubleheader that begins at 9:30 a.m. (CT) Aug. 24. |
