Animal shelter needs volunteers

The Nye County Animal Shelter is seeking volunteers to work either at the shelter or in the spay/neuter clinic. People who love animals and who want to learn new skills should stop by the Nye County Animal Shelter at 171 N. Kittyhawk Dr., or call 751-7020.

Artistic Centre registration

The Artistic Centre will hold registration for fall classes Monday, Aug.13, through Friday, Aug. 17, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Classes are available in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, hip hop, combo, gymnastics, acting and singing for students 3 to 18 years of age.

Classes begin Aug. 20. The Artistic Centre is located in the Wheeler Springs Plaza at 921 S. Hwy. 160, Suite 407. You may call 751-0880 for more information.

School dress code

The following dress code has been instituted for Pahrump Valley High School. Student attire should be modest in nature. Clothing that bears slogans which are sexually suggestive, promote or suggest the use of drugs, contain vulgar language or ethnic/racial slurs or any other word or image deemed inappropriate by the administration will not be permitted.

A complete list of items deemed "inappropriate" is available at the school. Students found in violation of the dress code may be asked to turn shirts inside out, call home for acceptable clothing, or be sent to in-house for the day.

The administration will have the discretion to determine the appropriateness of school attire.

Singles friendship club

The club meets at 5 p.m., Aug 15, at My Thai Restaurant, 5020 Pahrump Valley Blvd. If you can join, call Anita at 751-9626. For more information call Marion at 727-0253.

Rosemary Clarke orientation

Rosemary Clarke Middle School will hold parent orientation Thursday, Aug. 16.

Grade 6 meeting is at 6 p.m. and grade 7 at 7 p.m.

Parents will meet in the gym for a brief session and then dismissed for a guided tour through the school campus.

Parents and students are encouraged to attend in order to become familiar with the campus and have a chance to meet new administrative staff.

PVHS registration

Registration for enrollment for Pahrump Valley High School students began Aug. 1. The counseling office will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

For those in need of a later registration time, the office will also be open until 8 p.m., Aug. 9.

Women entrepreneur group

A support group is forming for women who either own a business in Pahrump or are interested in starting one. The group will meet one night a week in the evening as determined. If interested call Lee at 727-1459.

Thursday classes

Free guitar classes: A few spots left in intermediate (audition required) and beginner classes (no experience necessary). Positive Action (life skills) class (parental permission required to attend). Classes meet Thursdays. Contact Francine Winters for more information at 537-6555.

Family to Family August calendar

The August class schedule for Family to Family Connection, 160 S. Emery, is as follows:

Aug. 13 -- Foster parent support group, 6 p.m.

Aug. 16 -- No play group; Family Vehicle Safety Program class, 3:45 p.m. (registration required and there is a fee).

Aug. 21 -- Teen parenting class, 2-4 p.m.

Aug. 24 -- Nevada Early Intervention Services explore and learn play group, 11 a.m.

Aug. 31 -- Infant and child CPR class at 1 p.m., for families with small children. Registrations required.

The ABCs of Parenting class is at 3 p.m. every Wednesday (parents with children birth to 5 years old). Play group is at 1 p.m. every Thursday (except Aug. 16). Resource Lending Library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Kindergarten Orientation

Mt. Charleston Elementary will hold a special orientation for "new" parents. A tour of the school and a question and answer session will take place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 15, in the Mt. Charleston multi-purpose room.

Kindergarten students will be pre-assesed starting Tuesday Aug. 21, through Thursday Aug. 23. Assessment times will be assigned during registration. An orientation will take place at 9 a.m., Friday Aug. 24, in the multi-purpose room.

Kindergarten begins Monday, Aug. 27.

First Step yard sale

The First Step Club, Pahrump's only nonprofit recovery club, is having their annual yard sale from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 17, 18 and 19.

There will be handmade jewelry and other craft items for sale. Cash donations or items for the sale are still needed.

The club provides crucial support and information regarding alcohol, drug or any other addiction, and asks for community help in keeping the doors open.
