School dress code

The following dress code has been instituted for Pahrump Valley High School. Student attire should be modest in nature.

Clothing that bears slogans which are sexually suggestive, promote or suggest the use of drugs, contain vulgar language or ethnic/racial slurs or any other word or image deemed inappropriate by the administration will not be permitted.

A complete list of items deemed "inappropriate" is available at the school.

Students found in violation of the dress code may be asked to turn shirts inside out, call home for acceptable clothing, or be sent to in-house for the day.

The administration will have the discretion to determine the appropriateness of school attire.

Democratic mock caucus

The Democrats of Nye and Esmerelda counties will come together at 9 a.m., Aug. 9, for a mock caucus at the Tonopah Convention Center, 301 Brougher Av., in Tonopah. Call 866-737-3367 for more information.

Family to Family August calendar

The August class schedule for Family to Family Connection, 160 S. Emery, is as follows:

Aug. 10 -- Nevada Early Intervention Services explore and learn play group, 11 a.m.

Aug. 13 -- Foster parent support group, 6 p.m.

Aug. 16 -- No play group; Family Vehicle Safety Program class, 3:45 p.m. (registration required and there is a fee).

Aug. 21 -- Teen parenting class, 2-4 p.m.

Aug. 24 -- Nevada Early Intervention Services explore and learn play group, 11 a.m.

Aug. 31 -- Infant and child CPR class, 1 p.m., for families with small children. Registration required.

The ABCs of Parenting class is at 3 p.m. every Wednesday (parents with children birth to 5 years old). Play group is at 1 p.m. every Thursday (except Aug. 16). Resource Lending Library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Well owners meeting

The Nye County Well Owners Association monthly meeting place has been changed from the VFW to the Pahrump Library meeting room.

The time is changed from 11:30 to 9 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month. These are permanent changes.

Members get a free annual water testing, inspection and a well check for depth.

The membership fee is $20 per year.

Manse Elementary registration

Mt. Charleston enrollment

Mt. Charleston Elementary School will be registering new students for the 2007-08 school year starting 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Aug. 6. The office will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 9, for training. Bring proof of residency (electric bill, rent receipt, builder permit, etc.), original birth certificate, original immunization record (hepatitis A and B are state required), and social security card for copying. In order for a child to start kindergarten, the child must turn 5 years old by September 30, 2007.

Class lists with teacher name and room number will be posted outside the school office after 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17.

School begins Tuesday, Aug. 21, for grades 1 through 5, and Monday, Aug. 27, for kindergarten. Supply lists for all grades K-5, are available at the local businesses. Call 727-7892 for more information.

New schedule times at Johnson

J. G. Johnson Elementary School schedule has changed for the upcoming school year.

These schedule changes were made so that J. G. Johnson arrival and dismissal times would coincide with those of other elementary schools in Pahrump.

Students may arrive on campus at 8 a.m. Classes will begin at 8:25 a.m. Students will be marked tardy if they arrive after 8:25 a.m. Class will be dismissed at 3 p.m.

Registration for new students begins on Monday, Aug. 13, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Author workshop

Pahrump Community Library will host an author workshop Saturday, Aug. 11, at 10 a.m. Keith Bettinger, Jack Miller, and Merle Savage with the Las Vegas Valley Writers Group will give a seminar on all aspects of writing and publishing a book. The workshop is free and no prior registration is required. The authors will have copies of their books on hand.

PVHS registration

Registration for enrollment for Pahrump Valley High School students began Aug. 1. The counseling office will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

For those in need of a later registration time, the office will also be open until 8 p.m., Aug. 9.

Prescription meds assistance

Nye County, in a joint effort with the National Association of Counties, is offering a prescription discount card for those Nye County residents whose prescriptions are not covered by insurance.

Enrollment is free and there is no paperwork to complete or eligibility requirements to meet. These cards are accepted at all Nye County pharmacies.

Pick up cards at pharmacies or stop by Nye County Health and Human Services, located at 250 N. Highway 160, Ste. 4, or call 751-7095.

Babies in need

Stitches From the Heart needs volunteers to knit, crochet or quilt blankets, little sweaters and hats for babies in need.

These items are donated to hospitals all over the country. Donated yarn is desperately needed for seniors and children's knitting programs.

Exchange students

NWS Peace Program, a non-profit and CSIET-approved program, is looking for 10 caring families in the area to host high school students from Mongolia, Japan, Belgium, France and other countries.

The students are 15 to 18 years of age and will begin arriving in August, staying five to 10 months, attending local high schools. They speak English, have medical insurance and their own spending money.

Single parents, retirees and those who have small children, teens or no children are eligible to be host families.

Free drug tests

Teen Care provides free drug tests for the children of concerned parents and guardians.

The test detects marijuana, cocaine, meth, opiates, amphetamines and more. All services are free and confidential. Teen Care provides Christian help for teens involved with drugs or alcohol.

Low-cost vaccinations

SNAPS has been created in Pahrump as a solution to stop the killing of unwanted animals and offers low cost vaccinations, spaying and neutering of cats and dogs. Humane traps are available if needed.

SNAPS' next vaccination clinic will be held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 19, at the Comstock Park pool house.

Free vision screenings

During the month of August, Dr. George D. Leaks is offering free vision screenings for children ages five through 18.

These screenings will not result in a spectacle prescription. However, they will determine if a comprehensive eye exam should be scheduled.

Gymnastics workshop

The Artistic Centre is offering an advanced level gymnastics workshop from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 16.

Nathan Adelson Hospice volunteer Shelly McCann has delivered a wonderful opportunity to the hospice in Pahrump.

Nathan Adelson Hospice has scheduled a volunteer training class. For those who feel that giving back to the community is important to being a part of the community, this is just the thing.

Volunteer training classes are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 20-21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Nathan Adelson Hospice office at 1480 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 900. As the only non-profit hospice program in Southern Nevada volunteers are an integral part of the success of the operation.

NWTRB to meet in September

The U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board will meet in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Sept. 19.

The Board is charged with performing an independent review of the technical and scientific validity of U.S. Department of Energy activities related to implementing the Nuclear Waste Policy Act. Such activities include characterizing the proposed repository site for disposing of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste at Yucca Mountain, and packagig and transpoprting the waste.

The focus of the meeting, which will be open to the public, will be repository surface faclity designs and other oerations; other technical issues also may be discussed.

Sfinal meeting agenda will be posted on the Board web site (www.nwtrb.gov), or by telephone request approximately one week before the meeting.

Charity golf tournament

The Rural Health Care Foundation is having its sixth annual charity golf tournament. The event is sponsored on behalf of rural health care to include Central Valley Medical Center, Allen Memorial Hospital and Desert View Regional Medical Center.

The event will again be an 18-hole four person scramble to be held at Gladstan Golf Course, located in Payson, Utah. This fun event will be held on Sept. 13 with a Shotgun start at 8 a.m.

We look forward to your participation as a sponsor. Sponsor fees have been set to encourage greater participation. All proceeds will be used to support all health care services and activities in rural communities.

Format: four player scramble

Prizes awarded for first, second, and third player.

Closest to the hole, longest drive, and longest putt contests.

Registration fees are $75 per golfer or $300 per team. Only paid entries are guaranteed. Registration deadline, Aug. 20.

Fees include: green fees and cart, breakfast and lunch, tee prizes, contest prizes, and team awards.

Card players wanted

Hand and foot canasta is played about once every three weeks at 10 a.m. at the Elks Club. Card players and newcomers are welcome to participate.

Pet adoptions

Nye County Animal Services holds pet adoptions every second Saturday of the month, (weather permitting), at Case's, 6211 S. Quarter Horse Ave. (off Thousandaire).

Cats and kittens are $36 each and dogs and puppies are $64 each. Adoption fees include spay or neuter, rabies vaccination and a one-year license for dogs and puppies.

Safe Place youth program

Safe Place is an organization in Pahrump that provides immediate help and support to youth in crisis. The location sites are the Terrible Herbst convenient stores on Highway 160 and Lakeside, and Skate Zone on Calvada Boulevard.

Safe Place provides services for youth, such as crisis intervention, shelter, job placement, food vouchers, hygiene products, transportation and much more.

Adult literacy

The Pahrump Community Library, 701 East St., offers free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring to adults who struggle with reading.

Library homebound delivery service

The Pahrump Community Library is pleased to offer homebound delivery service for anyone who is unable to visit the library but would like books delivered by their friendly staff. Call 727-5930, ext. 12 for more information.

Fill the bucket truck event

Valley Electric Association (VEA) invites the community to join in the drive to collect school supplies to be distributed by the Nye County School District. The "Fill the Bucket Truck" event is scheduled for Aug. 11. A VEA bucket truck will be parked in the Wal-Mart lot to accept donations of school supplies from 7 a.m. through 1 p.m.

Karen Jackson from K-NYE Radio will broadcast the event live and each person who makes a donation will be given a drawing ticket for a chance to win Power Bill Credits and other fabulous prizes.

In addition, school supplies can be dropped off at either the main lobby of Valley Electric Association, 800 E. Highway 372, or at Kaye's Allstate Insurance, 150 S. Highway 160 (next to Albertson's) for the entire month of August. Any donations at either of these locations will also be eligible for a drawing ticket for power bill credits and other prizes.

Kindergarten Orientation

Mt. Charleston Elementary will hold a special orientation for "new" parents. A tour of the school and a question and answer session will take place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 15, in the Mt. Charleston multi-purpose room.

Kindergarten students will be pre-assesed starting Tuesday Aug. 21, through Thursday Aug. 23. Assessment times will be assigned during registration. An orientation will take place at 9 a.m., Friday Aug. 24, in the multi-purpose room.

Kindergarten begins Monday, Aug. 27.

Animal shelter needs volunteers

The Nye County Animal Shelter is seeking volunteers to work either at the shelter or in the spay/neuter clinic. People who love animals and who want to learn new skills should stop by the Nye County Animal Shelter at 171 N. Kittyhawk Dr., or call 751-7020.

Mammovan

The Mammovan will stay in Pahrump until tomorrow, Thursday Aug. 9., and will return to Pahrump on Monday, Aug. 27, and Tuesday, Aug. 28. The Mammovan is going to be in Pahrump twice this month.

Artistic Centre registration

The Artistic Centre will hold registration for fall classes Monday, Aug.13 through Friday, Aug. 17, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Classes are available in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, hip hop, combo, gymnastics, acting and singing for students 3 to 18 years of age.
