Nugget to host cat adoption
By CHRISTINA EICHELKRAUT
Pahrump residents will have the opportunity to take home a new cat Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Pahrump Super Cat Adoption Event to be held at the Pahrump Nugget Hotel & Casino. About 50 cats, all of whom have been rescued and nursed back to health from the For Love of Cats and Kittens (FLOCK) sanctuary here in Pahrump, will be ready and waiting to be taken to a new, loving home from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cats are among more than 400 cats that were found at the sanctuary last month in horrendous conditions, resulting in many of the cats being found sick, starving, and/or dehydrated. Nye County Animal Control took control of the sanctuary last month after a volunteer at the sanctuary tipped authorities off to the condition of the animals. Animal control then called in the Best Friends Animal Society, a Utah-based rescue organization that operates the country's largest sanctuary for homeless pets. The Best Friends workers, along with volunteers, have camped out at the local sanctuary and have been working around the clock to nurse as many of the cats as possible back to health. Now 50 of them are ready to be adopted and become the spoiled-rotten house cats they deserve to be. But residents don't have to wait until Saturday to start the adoption process. Applications can be filled out online, screened, and possibly approved online by visiting http://network.bestfriends.org/nyecounty/news, just click on the adopt tab. To help the rest of the cats, Best Friends is still actively seeking volunteers to help care for the cats at the sanctuary, located on 2171 S. Bond Street in Pahrump, at the end of Homestead Road. To volunteer, just drop by the shelter or call Tiffani Hill at (805) 698-5959, or email her at tiffanih@bestfriends.org. No previous experience is required, just a love of animals and a willingness to be loved in return. Donations are also always appreciated and can be made online by visiting www.bestfriends.org or by calling (435) 644-2001. |
