Competitors, the rough stock, people "tough enough to wear pink," and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation were the big winners in the Women's Professional Rodeo Association's two-night show, presented by Rocking M, at McCullough Arena last weekend.

Absent Saturday, however, was humor during breaks in the action, turning what should have been an exciting night into one that tested the patience of fans.

That displeasure reached its depths when a fan reacted to a skit by one of the clowns. The clown was supposed to be re-enacting a saddle bronc ride, when a woman came out of the stands, "protesting" that the horse was hers and it had been "rustled".

The announcer told the clown, "You could be hanged for doing something like that!" To which an apparently bored fan responded, "And that would be the best act we've seen tonight." Several other spectators left before the final -- and feature -- event of the night, barrel racing, was contested.

How tough was the rough stock?

Five of six tie-down roping competitors Saturday couldn't catch their steer, so only one place was paid. Kelly Lawrence of Phoenix won in 17.61 seconds, Friday, Kelly Lawrence of Phoenix was first in 16.10, with Debbie Robbins of Winslow, Ariz., second in 16.33, and Kim Williamson of Queen Creek, Ariz., third in 20.94.

Three compeitors tried bareback riding Saturday, but none completed the eight-second ride and each escaped serious injury after being thrown.
