Well owners meeting The Nye County Well Owners Association monthly meeting place has been changed from the VFW to the Pahrump Library meeting room. The time is changed from 11:30 to 9 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month. These are permanent changes. Members get a free annual water testing, inspection and a well check for depth. Call Kathy at 727-4211 for information. Free Movie Day Pahrump Community Library presents Free Movie Day, Saturday, Aug. 25, at 2 p.m. August's feature is "The Last Mimsy" (rated PG). Admission is free. Parents of children under 10 must remain in the library during viewing. Manse registration The Manse Elementary School registration for the 2007-08 school year for kindergarten and all new students will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning Aug. 6. The school is located at 1020 E. Wilson Road. Call 727-5252 for more information. Mt. Charleston Elementary enrollment Mt. Charleston Elementary School will be registering new students for the 2007-08 school year starting 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Aug. 6. The office will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 9 for training. Bring proof of residency (electric bill, rent receipt, builder permit, etc.), original birth certificate, original immunization record (hepatitis A and B are state required), and social security card for copying. In order for a child to start kindergarten, the child must turn 5 years old by September 30, 2007. Class lists with teacher name and room number will be posted outside the school office after 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17. School begins Tuesday, Aug. 21, for grades 1 through 5, and Monday, Aug. 27 for kindergarten. Supply lists for all grades K-5, are available at the local businesses. Call 727-7892 for more information. Kindergarten Orientation Mt. Charleston Elementary will hold a special orientation for "new" parents. A tour of the school and a question and answer session will take place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 15, in the Mt. Charleston multi-purpose room. Kindergarten students will be pre-assesed starting Tuesday Aug. 21, through Thursday Aug. 23. Assessment times will be assigned during registration. An orientation will take place at 9 a.m., Friday Aug. 24, in the multi-purpose room. Kindergarten begins Monday, Aug. 27. Animal shelter needs volunteers The Nye County Animal Shelter is seeking volunteers to work either at the shelter, or in the spay/neuter clinic. People who love animals and who want to learn new skills should stop by the Nye County Animal Shelter at 171 N. Kittyhawk Dr., or call 751-7020. New Hope enrollment New Hope Christian Academy is now accepting applications for enrollment for pre-kindergarten through the twelfth grade. Artistic Centre registration The Artistic Centre will hold registration for fall classes Monday, Aug. 13 through Friday, Aug. 17, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Classes are available in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, hip hop, combo, gymnastics, acting and singing for students 3 to 18 years of age. American Cancer Society Relay for Life The Pahrump Valley Relay for Life will be held from 6 p.m. Aug. 18 to 6 a.m. Aug. 19 at Petrack Park. Teams from area companies, organizations and neighborhoods will raise money to support the fight against cancer. Gymnastics workshop The Artistic Centre is offering an advanced level gymnastics workshop from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 16. Nathan Adelson volunteer training Nathan Adelson Hospice has scheduled a volunteer training class. For those who feel that giving back to the community is important to being a part of the community, this is just the thing. Volunteer training classes are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 20-21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Nathan Adelson Hospice office at 1480 E. Calvada Blvd., Suite 900. PVHS registration Registration for enrollment for Pahrump Valley High School students began Aug. 1. The counseling office will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Author workshop Pahrump Community Library will host an Author Workshop on Saturday, Aug. 11, at 10 a.m. Keith Bettinger, Jack Miller, and Merle Savage with the Las Vegas Valley Writers Group will give a seminar on all aspects of writing and publishing a book. The workshop is free and no prior registration is required. The authors will have copies of their books on hand. Leaks is offering free vision screenings for children ages five through 18. These screenings will not result in a spectacle prescription. However, they will determine if a comprehensive eye exam should be scheduled. Appointments are available and will be seen first, but walk-ins will be accepted. Fill the bucket truck event Valley Electric Association (VEA) invites the community to join in the drive to collect school supplies to be distributed by the Nye County School District. The "Fill the Bucket Truck" event is scheduled for Aug. 11. A VEA bucket truck will be parked in the Wal-Mart parking lot to accept donations of school supplies from 7 a.m. through 1 p.m. Karen Jackson from K-NYE Radio will broadcast the event live and each person who makes a donation will be given a drawing ticket for a chance to win Power Bill Credits and other fabulous prizes. In addition, school supplies can be dropped off at either the main lobby of Valley Electric Association, 800 E. Highway 372, or at Kaye's Allstate Insurance, 150 S. Highway 160 (next to Albertson's) for the entire month of August. Any donations at either of these locations will also be eligible for a drawing ticket for power bill credits and other prizes. Immunization clinic The Nevada State Health Division will hold a walk-in immunization clinic for school from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 20 and from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Pahrump Community Health Office, 250 N. McCann works aid hospice Nathan Adelson Hospice volunteer Shelly McCann has delivered a wonderful opportunity to the hospice in Pahrump. As an artist, McCann creates handcrafted greeting cards, wall art, journals, albums, frames and now wrapping paper. Because of her devotion to the hospice, a percentage of the sale of items purchased by residents of Pahrump will go directly to the hospice office in Pahrump. Low-cost vaccinations SNAPS has been created in Pahrump as a solution to stop the killing of unwanted animals and offers low-cost vaccinations, in addition to spaying and neutering of cats and dogs.
