Letters to the Editor

Thanks to Dr. Taylor

It's time to give recognition to a doctor that goes above and beyond for his patients.

I am speaking of Dr. Taylor at Affiliated Chiropractic.

I suffered a terrible accident in April and he made sure that I had the treatment I needed to heal. Because I had to continue working, Dr. Taylor even made sure my work environment could accommodate my needs.

He personally typed a letter I needed and made sure I had all my questions answered.

Dr. Taylor is one-in-a-million and the valley of Pahrump is fortunate to have his practice here.

SUSAN LYTLE

Student looking for fellow Muslims

A new male exchange student from Indonesia, age 15, is spending the upcoming school year here in Pahrump and would like to meet other Muslim faith people in Pahrump to enhance his ability to continue his religious practices.

Please contact his host family, Lisa Holleman at 209-3282, if you are interested in helping out.

Nuclear fact- finding trip

I think that the upcoming fact-finding trip that our "Illustrious County Commissioners" are about to undertake will go down in history just like the $40,000 educational (how we should think) seminar.

We already have a propaganda mill in town, known as the Yucca Mountain Information center, that can supply all the drivel that the Department of Energy wants us to know about nuclear garbage storage. Why then do we need to spend more of our tax dollars to educate the county commissioners about nuclear waste?

It's bad enough that they can't find the time to discover how long it will be before the influx of new developers use up our water and turn Pahrump into another ghost town.

I really feel that instead of touring sites that store nuclear garbage, they should stay home and take care of the business that they were elected for.

There are all kinds of projects in our county that need attention and they won't be here to help solve the on-going problems like streets, traffic, health department, etc. It won't be too much longer that our area will need more schools.

While Senator Reid is taking the administration to task for not pursuing wind and solar sources of energy, our elite commissioners are wasting money for a project that should never happen.

Wallowing in pork

Members of Congress, with the exception of Ron Paul, are addicts, and their drug of choice is money -- our money.

They just can't seem to get enough and it flows through their fingers like water. It doesn't seem to make any difference to them what they spend it on as long as they can spend it on something, like the infamous "bridge to nowhere" in Alaska.

They spend a staggering sum each year subsidizing farmers; however, the money seldom trickles down to the small family-owned farms as originally intended but instead goes to the owners of the mega-farms who know nothing about farming but enjoy reaping the profits, thanks to the taxpayers.

The amount of money Congress spends on various subsidies boggles the mind, and they don't mind bragging about the money they obtain for their constituents, whether needed or not. They seem to ignore the fact that they took it from us in the first place, due primarily to their legislation, and they are returning less than they took.

They wrote the rules governing federal taxes, and they are so complex that even the experts can't agree on their interpretation, yet we better not make a mistake.

Space doesn't permit a listing of the money that is essentially flushed down the toilet each year by Congress. Suffice it to say that if they practiced fiscal restraint, as though they were spending their own money, and they quit wallowing in pork, this nation and its people would be better served.

Weapons don't keep you safe

In response to Beth Duensing's letter of July 18: First of all, it really ticks me off when individuals and organizations go off on tangents, when they don't have all the facts or don't have their facts straight.

So, Beth, before you go off half-cocked in regard to banning weapons in the Rudd Center, first of all, it was not my suggestion to ban weapons in the Rudd Center. The suggestion was made by [Nye County] Commissioner Peter Liakopoulos.

Second, I was totaly unaware that we had a tyrannical government at the meeting held in the community center, to which we feel we must wear weapons. I am absolutely not against the owning or carrying of weapons.

There is a time and place for everything -- and civilized meetings, by supposedly civilized people -- are not the place for weapons.

Third, the irate person who called me on the telephone, did not want to "discuss" anything. He merely wanted to yell his displeasure with me and promptly hung up.

Finally, If you think that just because you openly carry a weapon you are protected from the evils around you, you are very wrong.

The thugs don't purchase their weapons, they take them from people like you. While you're feeling secure with your weapon firmly secured in its holster with the safety on, the thugs are lurking nearby with their stolen weapon in hand and cocked, and when they make their move, you won't even know it's coming. The thug walks away with your wallet and another weapon.

The thing I don't understand is why you do not choose to throw your tantrums at the courthouse and at the casinos and other businesses that prohibit weapons.

Prior to this I had no particular stance on the matter of weapons in the Rudd Center. However, since having read the comments and having discussions with others, I now suppport 100 percent the banning of weapons during meetings.

By the way, Nye County is the only county in the state that still allows weapons at meetings.
