By DON McDERMOTTPREPS Trojans to host Legacy tonightPVT
The Pahrump Valley offense, after struggling for three games and three quarters of the game against Yucca Valley a week ago, will be challenged by a different kind of opponent tonight. Legacy's Longhorns, 1-2 in its inaugural football season, visits the Trojans today; kickoff is at 7 p.m. at the high school stadium, where last week, the Trojans erupted for 28 points in a 9 1/2-minute span of the fourth quarter to defeat Yucca Valley, Calif., 34-30. The Longhorns, coached by Dave Snyder, has not played for two weeks, so the team has had ample time to prepare for the Trojans. And Snyder is somewhat familiar with the PVHS approach; in 2004, he was the coach at another new Las Vegas high school, Canyon Springs. The Trojans won 43-15, outscoring the Pioneers 35-7 in the second half by using the big play to demoralize the Canyon Springs defenders. Legacy defeated the Las Vegas junior varsity 19-7, around losses to Class 2-A teams Las Vegas The Meadows (15-14) and Needles, Calif., (34-6). Pahrump Valley was held to two touchdowns and a field goal in the first 15 quarters of the 2006 season. The Trojans lost 40-0 at Las Vegas Chapparal, 48-3 at home against Chino, Calif., Don Lugo, and 47-6 at Spring Creek, then trailed Yucca Valley 30-6 after three periods last week. In the fourth quarter, however, senior quarterback Travis Ott threw three touchdown passes (10 and 67 yards to wideout Vandale Wright and 10 yards to Jeremiah Ward) as the Trojans had scoring drives of 66, 65 and 74 yards. Wright contributed the defensive play of the game as well, returning an intercepted pass 34 yards in the sensational fourth-quarter comeback. Pahrump Valley finished with 338 yards total offense, its best attack stats by more than 100 yards in any prior game this season. Tonight's game wraps up the pre-Southern Nevada Class 3-A League schedule. Over the next four weeks, the Trojans will play at Mesquite Virgin Valley (Oct. 6), at Las Vegas Faith Lutheran (Oct. 13), at home against Overton Moapa Valley (Oct. 20), and at home against Boulder City (Oct. 26). The league season begins tonight, with Virgin Valley, 4-1, at Faith Lutheran, 1-3, and Boulder City, 0-4, at Moapa Valley, 1-3. |
