FISHING REPORT
EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR Fishing has been fair to good following last week's stocking of 7,000 rainbow trout. Powerbait has been very productive, and one angler reported that the color didn't seem to matter as the fish were hitting well on all colors. According to Ranger Pete Gil, the cooler water temperatures have killed off most of the weeds and the trout are cruising looking for food. ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR Cooler temperatures helped to increase the rainbow trout catching this week, according to Ranger Ben Johnson. One angler caught and released 14 trout and several crappie that averaged better than hand sized (over 9 inches) using olive-green wooly buggers. Those fishing from the dam area using Powerbait (rainbow and green colors) also were doing very well for the rainbow trout. LAKE MEAD Windy conditions this past week, including white caps and wind gusts of over 60 miles per hour at Overton Marina, didn't stop anglers from trying their luck out on the lake. The PWC (Personal Watercraft) beach has been one of the best spots in the Boulder Basin, with fish being caught using various lures and live shad being the best bait. Several striped bass were caught near Stewart's Point, as well as some being caught at the Mud Hole. The smallmouth bass fishery has really taken off, with many of the fish being caught during the tournaments and by anglers fishing around the far point at Echo Bay averaging between 2 and 2 1/2 pounds. The area just outside of the tires at Echo Bay has also been fishing well this week. The relocation of the Boulder Basin fishing dock from Horsepower Cove to the Hemenway Fishing Point was postponed due to high winds, but has been scheduled for this week, and the fishing dock within Echo Bay has been relocated to a location with easier access closer to the houseboats. LAKE MOHAVE Willow Beach saw a lot more action this week with the road reopened across the dam. Twenty anglers were on hand Saturday fishing for trout and stripers. Two stripers weighing 23 and 26 pounds were caught; one using an AC plug, and the other was caught on a similar lure. A 15-pound catfish was also brought in, as well as a lot of the planter rainbow trout. The best bait for the trout was green Powerbait. Sunday was a little slower with only 15 anglers being contacted with fewer trout being seen and no stripers. WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA Following the stocking at Cold Springs and Haymeadow Reservoirs this past week and Adams-McGill the week before, the trout fishing has really picked up. Daytime highs on the management area have really cooled down and are now in the mid to upper 60's with nighttime lows dipping below freezing. Traditionally fall is a great time for trout fishing and until the lakes freeze over the fishing promises to be really great. Most of the anglers fishing the reservoirs have been doing well using Powerbait and worms. URBAN PONDS Catfish were stocked into Sunset Park and Hafen Park Ponds (Mesquite) Sept. 12, and the Veteran's Memorial Park Pond, Lorenzi Park Pond, and Floyd Lamb State Park on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Anglers are still catching warm water species such as largemouth bass, bluegill, and green sunfish in all the Las Vegas area ponds. |
