Yucca Mountain The No. 2 Yucca Mountain citizens group has launched a new Web site: www.No2YuccaMountain.com. The site addresses safety and other concerns regarding the storage of nuclear waste in Nevada and the transport of radioactive material to the area. In addition, the group is advocating the strongest possible methods to prevent the repository from ever opening. Artists for 2007 The Pahrump Arts Council is calling all artists to participate in art shows to be held in 2007. Artists may call Doris at 537-6136, beginning in November, for one person shows at the Senior Center; Bernie at 727-9112 for one-two person shows at the library and mixed media, open shows at the County Courthouse; and Duane at 727-6035 for mixed-media, open shows at Charleston Peak RV Park. Adoption training A pre-service training schedule for foster/adoptive parents will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 20-22 at the Saddle West Hotel and Casino. One man art show The Pahrump Arts Council will hold a reception for local artist Bob Olson (One Man Show) from 1 to 3 p.m. today at the Pahrump Community Library, 701 East St. The community is invited to come and meet the artist and discuss his works of art. Safe Place seeking volunteers Safe Place, an organization providing immediate help and support to youth in crisis, needs at least seven volunteers as soon as possible to help transport children and assist with administrative duties (filing, answering the phone, etc.). Volunteers must have a desire to help children (Spanish speakers are welcome). Please call the volunteer coordinators' office at 727-7743, ext. 258 or 259, from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. Crafts and more Please stop by the booth of Saved By Grace Lutheran Church during the Fall Festival at Petrack Park. There will be many handmade crafts, the church cookbook and a chance to pick up a free friendship bag while they last. Community center mural The Pahrump Arts Council recently announced that the Pahrump Tourism Advisory Board has accepted a drawing of a proposed mural for the kiosk at the Bob Ruud Community Center. The mural, submitted by PAC member and local artist Duane Webb, will depict Pahrump and the beauty of the valley. Webb has completed many local murals, including the backdrop at Channel 30. State commander at Fall Festival Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America, Department of Nevada, State commander John Stroud will participate in the Fall Festival Parade. Commander Stroud is the first post Vietnam veteran to attain Department Commander status. He became eligible for the Veterans of Foreign Wars by receiving the expeditionary medal for Korean Service and is a 21-year, retired Air Force first sergeant. He has been active with the VFW since 1997. Like to sing? The Pahrump Community Choir is holding weekly rehearsals at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays at Rosemary Clarke Middle School, 4201 N. Blagg. If you like to sing, call Andrew Barnum at 751-6957 for more information. Stroke screening Residents living in and around Pahrump can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke. Life Line Screening will be at the Pahrump Moose Lodge No. 808 today at 1100 East Second St. Appointments will begin at 9 a.m. A stroke is ranked as the third leading killer in the world and the second among women. Through preventive screenings, the risk of having a stroke can be greatly reduced. Screenings are fast and painless. They involve the use of ultrasound technology and scan for potential health problems related to blocked arteries, which can lead to a stroke; aortic aneurysms, which can lead to a ruptured aorta; and hardening of leg arteries, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. Also offered for men and women is a bone density screening to assess the risk for developing osteoporosis. Each screening requires ten minutes or less to complete. A complete vascular screening package is $109. Sign up for a complete vascular package and include the osteoporosis screening and the cost is $129. Daughters of Mary craft bazaar The Daughters of Mary from Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church will hold their annual craft bazaar from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 10 and Nov. 11 in the church hall at 781 E. Pahrump Museum needs volunteers The Pahrump Valley Museum supports the arts in many ways and is seeking volunteers. Call John at 751-1970 if you can help out. Kiwanis yard sale The Kiwanis Club will hold a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 7 at the far end of the parking lot at the Bob Ruud Community Center. The sale is being held to assist two citizens in need of handicap ramps and to help the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army needs can goods and non-perishable items. Please donate food items and clean, workable items to the sale. Donated items may be brought at 7 a.m. the day of the sale. The Kiwanis Club is a 501(c)3 organization.
