Tonopah routs Keystone

SPECIAL TO THE PVT

TONOPAH -- On a cold, bitter night, the homestanding Tonopah Muckers warmed up their fans by blitzing Sandy Valley Keystone Academy 62-14, in a non-division high school football game Friday.

It didn't snow or rain, as it had at Wells a week earlier, but the temperatures were in the mid-30s at game time.

Tonopah led 44-0 in the third quarter, when coach Curt McElroy began to substitute liberally, putting in freshmen and sophomores to take on Keystone in a game called early in the fourth quarter because of Nevada's 45-point mercy rule.

Tonopah used a little different attack, as the usually pass-oriented Muckers ran the ball more.

Quarterback Mitchell Lehner completed 12 of 17 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions, as he retained his lead as greater Nevada's No. 1-rated passer, according to nevprep.com statistics.

Kevin McElroy rushed for 98 yards on just nine carries, including a 14-yard touchdown run.

The Muckers generated 404 yards in total offense. Defensively, Eric White returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown.

The Muckers, 3-1, travel to Spring Mountain Saturday for their Class A Central Division opener. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
