By DON McDERMOTTHORNETS AT HOME -- FINALLY -- THURSDAY Big Pine unkind in 80-43 win over BeattyPVT
BEATTY -- Yes, 80-43 was the final score, Gus Sullivan acknowledged. The Beatty High School football team he coaches was manhandled by Big Pine, Calif., Saturday afternoon, in a non-league game played in the Earthquake State. "It was close at halftime, but I told our boys that they would be coming after us in the second half," said Sullivan. And Big Pine did, outscoring the Hornets 46-18 after the break to wrap up its fourth victory without defeat and drop Beatty to 2-2. A major consolation: The Hornets get to play at home this week. Thursday, they take on a mystery team, Henderson Warren-Walker, with the kickoff at 7 p.m. "I don't know anything about Warren-Walker," said Sullivan, joining a vast majority who could say the same thing about a team that is in the Nevada Class A Central Division. On maxpreps.com, a national Web site focusing on high school football, there were a few "colorful" tidbits. The school colors are red, white and blue and their head coach is Randy Black. The Wolverines are 2-1, with wins against Las Vegas Agassi Prep (40-20) and Sandy Valley Keystone Academy (34-0), a team Tonopah (3-1) overwhelmed 62-14 Saturday. The Wolverines' loss came in a 52-32 shootout against Las Vegas Calvary Chapel. Their remaining home games are against Round Mountain Oct. 7 and Tonopah Oct. 14, with away games at Indian Springs Oct. 20 and Spring Mountain Oct. 26. And that is the extent of the information; no roster or statistics were readily accessible because of techno-glitches on the Web site. What matters is, the game is at home, so the Hornets (hopefully) will not experience some of the strange manuevers experienced at Big Pine. "We had a five-hour bus ride and arrived at Big Pine at around noon; the kickoff was at 1 p.m.," said Sullivan. "I asked the one of the officials how much time we had to get ready. He said 'Take your time, you're all right.' A few minutes later, he came back and said we had three minutes to get out onto the field. Here, I was hoping we would have some time just to relax after that long bus ride, on which we got held up in traffic because of construction north of Tonopah." The Hornets rushed to get ready and were in contention at halftime, because quarterback Matt Everts scored three touchdowns and Joe Serrano added another to counter a six-touchdown outburst by Big Pine. Everts finished with six touchdowns, and after one score, Byron Gray booted an extra point for the Hornets. "We took only 15 boys on the trip; two others were ineligible and two others missed the bus," said Sullivan. "So, we hardly had enough substitutes to go up against a team like Big Pine. "But I think our team has nothing to be ashamed of," said Sullivan, who related a couple more incidents. "About halfway through the second quarter, one of the officials came over and said we couldn't use a game ball provided by Big Pine anymore, which was something we had agreed on before the game started," said Sullivan. "Before the games we have played on the road earlier this season, the coaches came over to us and introduced themselves. That didn't happen at Big Pine (where Mark Tillemans is the head coach)." Sullivan also related a tale about how someone from Big Pine didn't want Sullivan to exchange a tape of the game with a Trona, Calif., coach, "which is something we do all the time," said the coach, who knows about procedure, his being a justice of the peace in Beatty. |
