AT SOUTHERN REGIONALS SITE PV girls increase lead with 20-stroke victoryIn a match that previewed the Southern Nevada Class 3-A regional girls golf tournament, Pahrump Valley dazzled its league opponents with a strong performance at Mountain Falls Thursday. On a bright, sunny calm afternoon, the Julie Floyd-coached Lady Trojans shot 459, earning a 20-stroke victory against Las Vegas Faith Lutheran (479). Mesquite Virgin Valley was third with 496 and Boulder City had 531. Overton Moapa Valley, for the fifth consecutive week, did not have enough girls entered to record a team score. The regionals -- at which the PV girls hope to repeat Thursday's performance -- will be contested Oct. 12 on the par 72, 6,000-yard Mountain Falls course, with Class 2-A West Wendover and Ely White Pine joining the golfers from the five Southern 3-A schools to play in the 18-hole medal play tournament. The top two teams and the top five players of non-qualifying schools qualify for the state 3-A tournament, to be played Oct. 16-17 on the Genoa Lakes Golf Club's Lake course. Pahrump Valley won the 2005 title, the third in eight years for the Lady Trojans. The top four teams and the first 10 individuals of non-qualifying schools from the combined East-West regionals will advance to Genoa Lakes for the 36-hole medal-play tournament. In 2004, Faith Lutheran won the title in a weather-abbreviated state tournament at Genoa Lakes. The East teams are Battle Mountain, Fernley, Winnemucca Lowry, Round Mountain, Spring Creek, Wells and Yerington. The West squads are from Dayton, Incline, Mineral County Hawthorne, North Tahoe, Reno Sage Ridge, Sparks, Truckee (Calif.) and Zephyr Cove Whittell. The regionals and state are in the not-too-distant future, and before those two tournaments are played, there is the matter of two more Southern 3-A League matches to ponder. The teams are at the Municipal course in Boulder City Thursday and they conclude the regular season Oct. 9 in a match hosted by Faith Lutheran. In the match Thursday, Pahrump Valley's first four finishers wrapped up the victory by shooting 77 (Desiree Fortin), 88 (Ashley Keller), 89 (Courtney Slamon) and 96 (Ashlee Bartholomew), for a total of 353. Jasper Biggs (111) and Meaghan Morales (109) completed the Trojans' lineup with 109. Faith Lutheran had the medalist, Candra Sumedhatip, who shot 76, but Kaitlin Main had 93, Brooke Prendes (111) and Reba Schneiderman (117), boosting the Crusaders' total to 397.Becca Reighard had a 94 at No. 5, and Shawn Haggerty, who shot an 89 in a match a week earlier, soared to 105. Virgin Valley had 388 from its first four -- Brittany Thurston (96), Samantha Bulloch (90), Amanda Bulloch (97) and Nakelle Faught (105). Hanna Bulloch had 124 and Felisha Baeza a 108 for the Bulldogs. Boulder City was not a factor, either, with its first four golfers shooting 417. Ashley Vince had 109, Ana McCollum 97, Heidi Harteis 100, and Margot Potter 111. Bethany Smith (120) and Tara McKeever (114) completed the Eagles' scoring. For Moapa Valley, Tracy Swanson had 116, Bethany Wilson 111, Belia Guzman 124, and Nadia Alvidrez 127. In the team standings after five matches, Pahrump Valley has 48 out of a possible 50 points, while Faith Lutheran is at 45, Virgin Valley 42 and Boulder City 35. Moapa Valley has zero points. In the player of the year standings, Sumedhatip has 57 out of 60 points, with two-time POY Fortin has 55 1/2; both are seniors. Keller, a sophomore, is third with 46 points and completing the top five are Virgin Valley's Samantha Bullooch (41) and Thurston (38 1/2). In the top 10 are Main, 29 1/2; Amanda Bulloch, 25; Salmon, 24 1/3; Bartholomew, 20 1/2, and Faught, 19. Biggs is 17th with 10 points for the Trojans, who have Samantha Stearns ranked 25th with four points. Morales has four points, and at two points is Nicole Balding. |
