By DON McDERMOTTPREP VOLLEYBALL Lake Mead downs PVHS in 5 gamesPVT So much for the home-court advantage. For the second time in 10 days, the Pahrump Valley High School Lady Trojans lost a non-league volleyball match to a Class A opponent. Defending Nevada 1-A champion Pahranagat Valley Alamo won 3-1 Sept. 12. Last Friday, Lake Mead Christian Academy, like Alamo a member of the South 1-A Division, rallied for a 3-2 win against the homestanding Trojans. The Eagles won the first two games rather easily, 25-15 and 25-16, before the PV girls prevailed 25-16, 25-21 to force a 15-point playoff. In game three, the Trojans led 9-3, 19-14, and 23-16 before getting the winning points from Michelle Dannenberger on a kill and an Eagle error. In the fourth game, Lake Mead held 9-7 and 19-18 advantages, before the Trojans took control. A service error by the Eagles tied it at 20-20, with the Trojans jumping into a 23-20 lead as Karen Visser, Kristi Daffer and Dannenberger got consecutive kills. An Eagle misplay produced the game-winning point. Pahrump Valley seemed to be in control of the fifth and deciding game, as the Trojans led 11-8. But the Lakers took advantage of their quickness to go on a 7-2 run to make it game, set, match. The Trojans were at home for a Southern Nevada Class 3-A match against defending league and regional champion Las Vegas Faith Lutheran Tuesday. Friday, Legacy, a new team out of Las Vegas, will visit for a non-league best-of-five match, starting at 5 p.m. "Another night of volleyball and another home game goes to the challenger," Richard Barker, the PVHS coach, said, in analyzing the match. "We are weak on defense, partially because I am still trying to find the right mix of players to build an effective offense. So, we have some confusion on defense. "We will work today (Monday) on getting our passes higher," said Barker. "That has been a point of reference for me to this team. We pass too flat and fast. "We cannot operate at that rapid tempo of the flat passes we are giving the offense," said Barker. "When we get a pass up in the air, I would like to see us run some sort of play off of it." |
