A preliminary hearing was scheduled for 10 a.m., Oct. 13, in Pahrump Justice Court for Jesus Rodrigues, who is accused in the shooting of Nye County Sheriff's Deputy Harry Williams Aug. 27.

Pahrump Justice of the Peace Tina Brisebill kept Rodrigues' bond at $100,000 cash or a $1 million surety bond, pursuant to the original arrest warrant.

Rodrigues, 36, was arrested Sept. 15 in Mecca, Calif., southeast of Palm Springs.

Public defender Tom Gibson, speaking through an interpreter, said Rodrigues waived his right to a speedy preliminary hearing. Nye County Chief Prosecutor Kirk Vitto asked for a preliminary hearing Oct. 6, but Judge Brisebill will be attending a state judicial conference in Tonopah that day. Gibson also asked for more time to prepare for the case.

"That's a little short notice to prepare for a case of the seriousness of this magnitude," Gibson told the judge.

Vitto said the preliminary hearing would be a very simple case to present, involving probable cause. He plans to present four witnesses.

Rodrigues is charged with attempted murder of a sheriff's deputy with use of a deadly weapon; battery on a peace officer with use of a deadly weapon and assault with a deadly weapon.

The attempted murder count charges that Rodrigues willfully, unlawfully with malice aforethought attempted to kill and murder Williams by shooting at him, hitting him with one shot in the leg, on or near Fourth and Center streets in Pahrump. The assault charge alleges that Rodrigues put Williams in reasonable apprehension of immediate bodily harm or willfully and unlawfully attempted to commit a violent injury upon the victim.

The criminal complaint lists four aliases for the suspect: Jerul Rodrigues, Jesus Avila Rodrigues, Jesus Rodrigues-Avila and Jesus J. Rodriguez.

Brisebill set bail at $60,000 each for two defendants listed as accessories in the shooting, Shawna Irene Millar and Victoria Lynn Garcia, Sept. 7.

The Nye County Sheriff's Department had assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team in Las Vegas to help locate Rodrigues. That collaboration resulted in leads indicating that Rodrigues had made his way to Riverside County, Calif. As it turned out, Rodrigues was hiding at his brother's residence in a trailer park in Mecca.

Officers attempted to stop Rodrigues, who led them on a five-mile chase until his vehicle overturned. Rodrigues fled on foot but later returned to the trailer and was taken.

A bevy of Nye County sheriff's deputies were in justice court at Rodrigues' initial appearance.
