Bright sunshine, cooler temperatures and an energizing positive mood turned what is believed to be the first interscholastic cross country meet ever staged in the Pahrump Valley into a top-flight event Wednesday.

Byrnes, S.C., earned a 21-20 victory against Cincinnati Moeller; Lakeland, Fla. edged Cincinnati St. Xavier 25-22 in overtime; Don Bosco Prep of Ramsey, N.J., stunned Centerville 21-0, and Concord, Calif., De La Salle outslugged Cincinnati Elder 56-38, in the Kirk Herbstreit-designed Ohio vs. The USA High School football challenge last weekend.
