RICHARD STEPHENS / PVT A Nye County Sheriff?s Office patrol rifle class kicks up dust as they fire Mi16-style rifles at paper targets during a recent windy day at the Beatty shooting range. Lt. Frank Jarvis said the wind is not a deterrent to training because "there are bad guys on windy days too." Deputies must not only qualify on the range with their weapons (many of the rifles are owned by the individuals) but also pass written tests and attend a three-day class.
