Phone scam alert issued
The Nye County Sheriff's Office has issued an alert regarding a possible telephone scam. The Sheriff's Office was told Sept. 18 that the reporting party had received two phone calls from two heavily accented people (possibly Latin American or Dominican descent). In both cases the persons calling claimed to represent Medicare and knew the reporting party's name and mailing address. The persons calling said they needed the bank account number of the individual so that she could get her new Medicare card sent to her. The individual said that during the telephone calls she heard commotion in the background similar to the sounds made by telemarketers. No information was given to the caller as the individual hung up on them. In the event you should receive a similar call, hang up on them and contact Medicare as soon as possible to verify the call. The Nye County Sheriff's Office urges people not to give out personal information over the telephone or Internet in this or similar instances. |
