Kids Day America Dr. Melissa Plant will sponsor the twelfth annual Kids Day America/International, a health, safety and environmental awareness day, from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Honeysuckle Park. She will provide essential information on crime prevention, child safety and environmental awareness, provide free spinal exams and scoliosis screenings, and distribute information on disease prevention and specific health issues that affect children. Special child ID cards will be issued to every child who attends and the Nye County Sheriff's Office will be on hand to provide free fingerprinting of all children. The Fire Department will bring its fire truck and will teach fire safety tips to the children. In addition, there will be special give-a-ways, prize drawings every half-hour, free balloons and snacks. Red Hatters book discussion group The Pahrump Valley Red Hatters book discussion group will meet at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Pahrump Community Library, 701 East St. This will be a Red Hat hoot, open to all Red Hatters. Cookies, coffee and tea will be offered. A fee of $1 will be collected to cover expenses, with half donated to the library. The book to be discussed is "Agatha Raisin & The Quiche of Death," by M.C. Huge rummage sale in Amargosa A huge rummage sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Amargosa Valley Community Center, 821 E. Amargosa Farm Road. Lots of clothes (dressy, casual and in-between), shoes (including men's dress shoes), toys, stuffed animals, decorative items, small and large appliances, kitchenware, linens and more will be available, as well as hot dogs, nachos, soda and popcorn. PVHS seeks nurse's office volunteer Pahrump Valley High School needs a volunteer as soon as possible to help in the nurse's office. The nurse's office needs a volunteer certified in cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) trained. Teen night The Nye Communities Coalition, in partnership with St. Martin's in the Desert Episcopal Church and The Boys and Girls Club, will host a free teen night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Boys and Girls Club. Middle- through high school-age students are invited to come out for an evening of enjoyable activities, including karaoke, games, pool, pizza and drinks. Rummage sale Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church will hold a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Our Lady of the Valley church hall on 781 E. Gamebird Road. Quilts 4 Cancer benefit Quilts 4 Cancer will hold a benefit featuring Paula Reid of Palmdale, Calif., who will give the lecture, "Confessions of an Avid (some say batty) Quilter," at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bob Ruud Community Center. Reid will show all of the quilts she has and discuss quilting, problems she encountered and solved and other quilting tips. Admission is $25 or $5 (if a finished quilt 40 by 60 or 50 by 50 or larger is brought to the benefit). The quilts will stay in the area for those with cancer. Quilts4cancer.org is a non-profit organization with a goal to comfort everyone in the area with cancer with a cancer comfort quilt. Doctors and/or medical centers can call for a quilt for an area recipient. Yucca Mountain The No. 2 Yucca Mountain citizens group has launched a new Web site: www.No2YuccaMountain.com. The site addresses safety and other concerns regarding the storage of nuclear waste in Nevada and the transport of radioactive material to the area. In addition, the group is advocating the strongest possible methods to prevent the repository from ever opening. Stroke screening scheduled Sept. 29 Residents living in and around Pahrump can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke. Life Line Screening will be at the Pahrump Moose Lodge No. 808 Sept. 29 at 1100 East Second St. Appointments will begin at 9 a.m. A stroke is ranked as the third leading killer in the world and the second among women. Through preventive screenings, the risk of having a stroke can be greatly reduced. Screenings are fast and painless. They involve the use of ultrasound technology and scan for potential health problems related to blocked arteries, which can lead to a stroke; aortic aneurysms, which can lead to a ruptured aorta; and hardening of leg arteries, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. Also offered for men and women is a bone density screening to assess the risk for developing osteoporosis. Each screening requires ten minutes or less to complete. A complete vascular screening package is $109. Sign up for a complete vascular package and include the osteoporosis screening and the cost is $129. Teacher mini-grants The Pahrump Valley Rotary awards mini-grants, ranging from $50 to $250 to teachers of grades K-12, for special classroom projects at schools within Pahrump.
