By DON McDERMOTTHORNETS 1-1 Beatty runs by LakersPVT Yes, Beatty's offense has been prolific, generating 86 points in two football games this season. But it was the defensive effort by the Hornets that grabbed the attention of Gus Sullivan, Beatty's first-year coach, after the Hornets rolled past homestanding Pyramid Lake 42-14 Saturday afternoon. The Hornets had surrendered 64 points in losing by 20 at Laughlin a week earlier. "Coach Martin Church -- he played football at Pahrump Valley High School -- is our defensive coordinator," said Sullivan, whose team is now 1-1. "After we lost to Laughlin, he revamped everything defensively. We went from using a 5-2-1 to going with 4-4 or 4-3-1 formations ... and he moved some personnel around. "We had Dannie Kibbie and Tony Heilman as the linebackers, along with Matt Everts," said Sullivan. "On the line, we had Kyle Marchand and Joe Serrano, as well as Junior Dare and Jeremy Peden." The Hornets scored the first 28 points of the game as they handed the Lakers their second loss of the still-young season. Everts, a senior quarterback, directed a ground-oriented offense that kept the bigger, but slower, Lakers off-balance. Everts, Dare and Heilman scored the Beatty touchdowns, operating behind the offensive line of center Nick Gorman, guards Kibbie and Marchand, and ends Byron Gray and Mario Roman. Gorman and Kibbie are seniors, while Marchand and Roman are sophomores. Gray is a junior. To win the game was one thing. The trip to Pyramid Lake was another rival, so to speak. "We left for Pyramid Lake at 3:30 a.m. on a school bus," said Sullivan. "We got there in time to unload and suit up to play the game (which had a 1 p.m. kickoff). We won, got back on the bus and headed home. We got back at 11:30 p.m. ... that's 20 hours, most of it on the bus." The Hornets will be experts at traveling before this season ends. Friday, they play at Lone Pine, Calif., and on Sept. 23, Beatty plays at Big Pine, Calif. Last weekend, Big Pine ruined Lone Pine's opener, 49-0, as the Warriors boosted their record to 2-0. In Big Pine's opener a week earlier, Coleville, Calif., was socked 60-22. "We finally get to play a home game Sept. 28, against (Henderson) Warren-Walker," said Sullivan. "Come on up and join us."
