Virgin Valley uses home-course edge to win golf match

Mesquite Virgin Valley, playing at The Palms, its home course, used that local knowledge to shoot 454 and win a Southern Nevada Class 3-A League girls golf match Thursday.

The Lady Bulldogs won by 10 strokes against Pahrump Valley (464), while third-place Las Vegas Faith Lutheran had 475. Boulder City finished with 526, with three Overton Moapa Valley girls shooting 116 or higher on the par 71, 6,000-yard course.

It was the first loss of the season for Pahrump Valley, which has 29 out of a possible 30 points this season. Virgin Valley and Faith Lutheran have 26 points each, while Boulder City is at 21. Moapa Valley has not had a team score yet this season.

Canda Sumedhatip of Faith Lutheran took over the lead in the player of the year points chase. A 77 earned medalist honors for the Crusaders' senior; Sumedhatip has 35 points, while two-time player of the year Desiree Fortin of Pahrump Valley has 32.5. Fortin had an 83 in the match, yielding team honors to sophomore Ashley Keller, who shot an 81.

Courtney Salmon and Ashlee Bartholomew each had 98 for Pahrump Valley, which got a 104 from Jasper Biggs. Sam Stearns, the No. 6 starter, had 117.

For Virgin Valley, Brittany Thurston had 83, Samantha Bulloch 84, Amanda Bulloch 89, Nakelle Faught 96 and Felisha Baeza 102. Hannah Bulloch had a 109, which did not count.

For Faith Lutheran, Kaitlin Main had 96, Shawn Haggerty 99, Becca Reighard 101 and Reba Schneiderman 102. Brooke Prendes added 107 for the Crusaders.

Ashley Vince paced Boulder City with 98, with Margot Potter at 100, Heidi Harteis 101, Ana McCollom 105, Bethany Smith 122 and Bridget Ward 126.

For Moapa Valley, Tracy Swanson had 116, Shalyce Parashants 120, and Bethany Wilson 121.

Pahrump Valley and the rest of the league plays a 3-A match Thursday, hosted by Moapa Valley. On Friday, the Lady Trojans go to San Clemente, Calif., for a tournament, starting at 7 a.m.

On Sept. 21, the Southern teams play at Mountain Falls, starting at 11 a.m.; the Falls will host the Southern regionals Oct. 12, with the state tournament being contested at Genoa Lakes in the greater Reno area Oct. 16-17.

NOTES -- Ashley Keller moved into third place in the Southern Nevada Class 3-A League player of the honor honors in girls golf ... Keller, a sophomore, has 29 points, with Candra Sumedhatip first with 35 and Desiree Fortin, the 2004 and 2005 player of the year, second with 32.5 ... Completing the top 10 are 4. Brittany Thurston, 24; 5. Samantha Bulloch, 23; 6. Kaitlin Main, 18.5; 7. Amanda Bulloch, 17; 8. Nakelle Faught, 14.5; 9. Courtney Salmon, 13.33, and 10. Ashlee Bartholomew, 10.33.
