CLASS A FOOTBALL

Round Mountain bows to Eureka

SPECIAL TO THE PVT

Not to be outdone by the offensive binges by Carlin and Tonopah the previous night, Eureka put up some prodigious numbers of its own Saturday, the Web site, nevprep.com, reported.

While Carlin was outscoring Tonopah 62-58 in a free-wheeling inter-divisional game at Carlin, the host Vandals overwhelmed Nye County and Nevada Class A Central opponent Round Mountain 74-28 in a non-division game as Aaron Bond scored seven touchdowns six on runs and one on a pass reception. Bond rushed for 314 yards on 18 carries, and his TD reception covered 28 yards.

Quarterback Rod Garcia completed all seven of his passes for 119 yards and a touchdown in a game that ended in the middle of the fourth quarter because of Nevada 1-A's 45-point mercy rule.

Tayler Hodson added 49 rushing yards and scored on two of his three carries, and Patrick Edwards had four receptions and two interceptions. The Vandals (2-0) finished with 496 rushing yards and 634 yards in all.

The 634-yard total is the sixth-highest listed in the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association record book, and was only one yard short of the fifth-highest figure, 635 by Class 3-A Winnemucca Lowry against North Tahoe in 2001. The state record is 734, by Class 4-A Sparks Spanish Springs against South Tahoe in a 2004 game during which the Cougars' Mike Kanellis, now playing for the University of Nevada at Reno, set a state record with 533 yards rushing.

Eureka will face a much more daunting challenge Friday night when it travels to Pahranagat Valley Alamo, the defending 1-A state champion. The Panthers improved to 3-0 this season by routing host Fredonia, Ariz., 60-8 in a game that was played with a running clock through most of the fourth quarter, per Arizona rules.

In that Tonopah-Carlin shootout, Muckers quarterback Mitch Lehner threw for 487 yards and six touchdowns, while Carlin's extraordinary running back, Pete Armendariz, scored seven touchdowns, including the game-winner in the final 20 seconds.

Mountain View coach Ray LeBoeuf wasn't particularly happy with the means by which his team beat visiting Indian Springs 32-28 in another 1-A non-league game, but he couldn't argue with the end.

Mountain View took a 16-0 lead in the first quarter as Craig Sacra returned the opening kickoff 60 yards for a score and added a 47-yard run on the Saints' next possession. After that, though, the Saints (2-1) didn't get a first down in the second or third quarters, and the Thunderbirds (0-2) pulled ahead 20-16 in the fourth quarter before Andrew Ogris scored on runs of 45 and 50 yards and Chandler LeBoeuf tackled a Thunderbird ballcarrier in the end zone for a safety.

Ogris finished with 136 yards on 11 carries. Robert Hernandez had 10 solo tackles and nine assists, one on Chandler LeBoeuf's tackle for the safety, and middle linebacker Billy Paddack had 10 solo tackles and three assists.
