SafePlace seeking donated office space SafePlace, an organization that is here in Pahrump to provide immediate help and support to youth in crisis, is trying to obtain donated office space that would adequately accommodate youth drop-ins and storage for supplies and donations. The organization is new to Pahrump and would provide services such as crisis intervention, shelter, job placement, food vouchers, hygiene products, toiletries, transportation and much more. DAR meeting The Pahrump Springs Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold its regular monthly meeting at 10 a.m. today at the Bob Ruud Community Center, Room B. Vendors wanted The wild West Extravaganza (Sept. 22, 23 and 24) has a few vendor spaces left. Spaces are 10 by 10 at $150 each with a $25 rebate after the event. A willingness to work with middle- to high school-age students is a must. A grounding in the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic is needed to tutor for an hour or more. PVHS seeks nurse's office volunteer Pahrump Valley High School needs a volunteer as soon as possible to help in the nurse's office. The nurse's office needs a volunteer certified in cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) trained. The office is open from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday. Writers wanted The Nevada Country Music Association is looking for material to include in its monthly newsletter, "Country Notes." Offerings can be anything related to the Old West and/or country music. Short anecdotes, stories, poems, biographies of famous country music stars, etc., are welcome. Resource center thanks Pahrump Family Resource Center, a program under No To Abuse, would like to thank everyone who helped make the School Supply Drive a success. The drive enabled 239 children to attend school prepared. Panic disorder group Panic Relief Inc., a non-profit organization, is forming a group to help people who suffer from panic, anxiety and agoraphobia to control panic attacks and anticipatory anxiety while learning how attitudes and current thoughts affect panic and anxiety. Homeschool Bowling League sign ups Youths from 3 to 17 years old may sign up now with parental consent for the Homeschool Bowling League, which will meet at 9:15 a.m. Wednesdays during the season (today through Nov. 1). The cost is $48 per child. No bowling experience is necessary; bowling coaching tips will be available and two games will be played each week (shoes included). Teen night The Nye Communities Coalition, in partnership with St. Martin's in the Desert Episcopal Church and The Boys and Girls Club, will host a free teen night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Boys and Girls Club. Middle- through high school-age students are invited to come out for an evening of enjoyable activities, including karaoke, games, pool, pizza and drinks. Rosemary Clarke open house Parents and students are invited to attend an open house at Rosemary Clarke Middle School at 6 p.m. Thursday in the gymnasium. Youth speaker to visit schools Jeff Yalden, a youth motivational speaker, will be in Pahrump Thursday to conduct his moving student assemblies at Rosemary Clarke Middle School and Pahrump Valley High School. VFW September calendar The September calendar of events for the VFW Post 10054 on Homestead Road is as follows: domestic beer $1.25, bottle beer $1.50, draft $1.25 every Thursday; breakfast served from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Sunday, $4 donation; and full menu lunches served by Dennis from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Rummage sale Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church will hold a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Our Lady of the Valley church hall on 781 E. Quilts 4 Cancer benefit Quilts 4 Cancer will hold a benefit featuring Paula Reid of Palmdale, Calif., who will give the lecture, "Confessions of an Avid (some say batty) Quilter," at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bob Ruud Community Center. Reid will show all of the quilts she has and discuss quilting, problems she encountered and solved and other quilting tips. Admission is $25 or $5 (if a finished quilt 40 by 60 or 50 by 50 or larger is brought to the benefit). The quilts will stay in the area for those with cancer. Quilts4cancer.org is a non-profit organization with a goal to comfort everyone in the area with cancer with a cancer comfort quilt. Doctors and/or medical centers can call for a quilt for an area recipient. VFW birthday party A birthday party for the VFW Post and Auxiliary will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at 4651 S. Homestead Road. The Post is 35 years old and the Auxiliary is 30. All charter members, their families and friends, and the public are welcome to come and celebrate. Refreshments will be served. Obedience Club event The Pahrump Valley Obedience Club is sponsoring an Obedience "A" match at 9 a.m. Saturday at the soccer field behind the Town Hall. Rummage sale in Amargosa A huge rummage sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Amargosa Valley Community Center, 821 E. Amargosa Farm Road. Lots of clothes (dressy, casual and in-between), shoes (including men's dress shoes), toys, stuffed animals, decorative items, small and large appliances, kitchenware, linens and more will be available, as well as hot dogs, nachos, soda and popcorn. Kids Day America Dr. Melissa Plant will sponsor the twelfth annual Kids Day America/International, a health, safety and environmental awareness day, from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Honeysuckle Park. She will provide essential information on crime prevention, child safety and environmental awareness, provide free spinal exams and scoliosis screenings, and distribute information on disease prevention and specific health issues that affect children. Special child ID cards will be issued to every child who attends and the Nye County Sheriff's Office will be on hand to provide free fingerprinting of all children. The Fire Department will bring its fire truck and will teach fire safety tips to the children. In addition, there will be special give-a-ways, prize drawings every half-hour, free balloons and snacks. Pahrump Valley Rough Riders The Pahrump Valley Rough Riders will hold its September show at 6 p.m. Saturday at McCullough Arena. Sign ups are from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. the day of the event.
