McKenzie Dean picked up where she left off at the Nevada Class 3-A State Track and Field Championships last spring.

Now a sophomore, Dean debuted in cross country for Pahrump Valley in a meet Wednesday at Las Vegas Sierra Vista -- and won. The 3-A champion in the 3200-meter run in May won the 2.4-mile race in 16 minutes, 51 seconds, finishing seven seconds ahead of Class 4-A Henderson Coronado's Michaelanne Laurent. Roxanne Phillips of Coronado was third in 18:44.

No other individual results were available, but in the team scoring, the Pahrump Valley girls totaled 81 points to finish behind Coronado (21), Sierra Vista (63), and Liberty (77). In the boys' meet, Coronado led with 21 points, while Sierra Vista had 52, Liberty 60 and Pahrump Valley 110. Matt Dalrymple of Coronado won in 14:06.

In non-league girls soccer Tuesday, Pahrump Valley won 3-2 at Boulder City, with Emily Poertner, Brittany Orr and Casey Burtenshaw scoring for the Trojans. The PV junior varsity lost 1-0.

In a boys' soccer match at Pahrump Valley, the Trojans lost 2-1 to Boulder City, which won on a goal scored in the 77th minute. Cole Blake had the lone PVHS goal.

Thursday, the Pahrump Valley teams traveled to Mesquite for non-league games against Virgin Valley. Tuesday, coach Gene Smith's boys go to Las Vegas Faith Lutheran, while Steve Coleman's girls are at home against Faith. Both games start at 3 p.m.

Next Thursday, Moapa Valley will be the opposition in the first Southern Nevada Class 3-A League games of the fall, with the boys playing at home and the girls at Overton; again, the action begins at 3 p.m.

On the lighter side ... there will be a Nye Burger Challenge at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Archie's.

The coaches -- Brian Hug, Wiley Meade, Preston Dockter and Steve Critchlow -- have challenged seniors Mike Colucci, Jeremiah Ward, Steve Kelley and Travis Ott to determine who can eat one of those monster burgers the fastest. (And a happy stomach ache to you, too ...)

Mere Mortals (coaches) vs. Human Eating Machines (teenage boys) ... that oughta be fun (burp!) ...
