Consider this a pre-ratings. Not enough tough, in-your-face games have been played to determine a valid top 10 for the inaugural Pahrump Valley Times Nevada High School football ratings.

The list this week will merely give prep fans an idea of which teams to watch as the season unfurls. More serious (logical?) ratings will follow.

No. 1 in the first top 10 is defending state Class 4-A champion Las Vegas, with the Wildcats' primary threats for similar honors in 2006 to come from No. 2 Reno, 1-0; No. 3 Las Vegas Cimarron-Memorial, 2-0, and No. 4 Sparks Reed, 2-0.

The best teams in Class 3-A are up North, with Sparks, Dayton and Spring Creek all at 2-0.

Pershing County Lovelock, West Wendover and Battle Mountain again appear to be the tops in Class 2-A.

Pahranagat Valley Alamo, the defending state champion in 1-A (eight-man football), will rank No.1 in that class until some team proves it's better than the Panthers, who are 2-0 and averaging a run-and-gun 54 points a game this season.

The survivor of tonight's inter-divisional clash between Carlin, 2-0, and visiting Tonopah, 1-0, will move into the chief contender's spot next week.

Alamo's No. 1 rating will stay in effect next week, regardless of how the Panthers fare on an out-of-state trip to Fredonia, Ariz., Saturday.
