Undefeated Spring Creek tops Crusaders

Spring Creek, which hosts Pahrump Valley Sept. 15, made a trip to southern Nevada pay off last Friday, as the Spartans defeated Las Vegas Faith Lutheran 20-13.

The Spartans, who will play at Overton Moapa Valley Sept. 22 in another North-South Class 3-A matchup, moved to 2-0 with their victory against the Crusaders.

Steven McCall threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to Adam Jones in the fourth quarter for Faith Lutheran, but all that did was bring the Crusaders to within a touchdown. Chris Schulte booted field goals of 23 and 36 yards in the first half for Faith Lutheran.

Spring Creek was led by Caleb Wing, a senior tailback who rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown. Junior quarterback Michael Royer threw a 76-yard touchdown pass to Michael Krueger in the second quarter and he got a score of his own on a five-yard run in the first period.

McCall rushed for 52 yards and completed two passes for 83 yards for the Crusaders, 1-1 this season.

In other games involving Southern 3-A teams, Mesquite Virgin Valley squared its record at 1-1 with a 29-20 win against Northern 3-A opponent Fernley; Moapa Valley fell 49-7 to Hurricane, Utah, and Boulder City lost 28-0 to Bullhead City, Ariz., Mohave.

Elsewhere, Sparks, a Northern 3-A League team now 2-0, ripped Class 2-A Incline 39-6; Dayton moved to 2-0 with a 27-7 romp past Mammoth, Calif.; defending state 3-A champion Truckee, Calif., lost its opener 10-0 to Bishop, Calif., and Pahrump Valley lost 40-0 to Class 4-A Las Vegas Chaparral.

In Friday games, it will be Pahrump Valley, 0-1, playing at home against Chino, Calif., Don Lugo, 0-0; Kanab, Utah, at Moapa Valley, 0-1; Hurricane, Utah, 1-2, at Virgin Valley, 1-1; River Valley, Ariz., at Boulder City, 0-2; Winnemucca Lowry, 0-2, at Class 2-A Ely White Pine, 0-1; Dayton, 2-0, at Class 4-A Reno Damonte Ranch, 0-1, at Truckee, 0-1, at Colfax, Calif.

Kanab defeated Utah opponents Gunnison Valley 47-8, Beaver 43-14 and North Sevier 47-32 to start the season 3-0.

On Saturday at 7 p.m., Faith Lutheran, 1-1, will host Fernley, 1-1.

Southern 3-A League play begins Oct. 6, with Virgin Valley going to Pahrump Valley and Faith Lutheran visiting Moapa Valley.

In succeeding weeks, it will be Pahrump Valley at Faith Lutheran and Virgin Valley at Boulder City Oct. 13; Moapa Valley at Pahrump Valley and Faith Lutheran at Boulder City Oct. 20, and Boulder City at Pahrump Valley and Moapa Valley at Virgin Valley Oct. 26.

The top two Southern teams advance directly to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association-sanctioned state semifinals.
