Three things Class A football fans in Nevada can count on.

Pahranagat Valley Alamo is not going to back off.

Carlin will always be a threat.

Tonopah's no-huddle spread offense will befuddle opponents again.

Alamo, the state defending champion in the Class A eight-man format, overpowered Smith Valley 66-20 to move its record to 2-0; the Panthers have outscored their rivals, including 2004 state 1-A kingpin Wells, 108-20.

Carlin, which has been a perennial challenger for state honors, crunched Round Mountain 55-6, giving it two victories in as many starts against Central Class A teams. A week earlier, Carlin wrecked Indian Springs 46-6, and this week, the East Division power entertains 2004 and 2005 Central Division champion Tonopah Friday night.

Tonopah opened its 2006 campaign with a 36-28 win against surprisingly potent Las Vegas Mountain View Christian Saturday afternoon.

In other 1-A games, Big Pine, Calif., trounced Coleville 66-20; and Rimrock, Idaho, stymied Owyhee, 22-0. Beatty was idle and will return to action Saturday at Pyramid Lake. Last Wednesday, Eureka defeated Wells 22-14. Wells quarterback Bryce Montoya was shaken up during the game; afterwards, he collapsed, apparently having sustained a severe head injury.

Montoya had to be transported to Salt Lake City for treatment by University of Utah Medical Center doctors. He is recovering, but it is doubtful the sophomore quarterback will play football again because of the nature of the injury.

Alamo led 36-0 after one quarter and achieved the 45-point mercy rule limit in the third quarter. The Panthers had 326 yards rushing and 95 passing.

Pete Armendariz, who undoubtedly will be the focus of Tonopah defenses Friday night, rushed for 171 yards and four touchdowns on 13 carries for Carlin. Josh Kirkwood added 48 yards and a touchdown rushing for the Railroaders.

This weekend, most of the action is on Saturday. Beatty plays at Pyramid Valley, while McDermitt travels to Jackpot; Alamo goes to Fredonia, Ariz.,; Round Mountain is at Eureka; Indian Springs visits Mountain View Christian, and Wells travels to Smith Valley. All games are to start at 1 p.m.

Tonopah, meanwhile, overcame six turnovers to hold off visiting Mountain View 36-28 in the Muckers' season opener.

Quarterback Mitch Lehner completed 21 of 43 passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 57 yards on nine tries, while sophomore running back Scott Thibodeaux ran for 59 yards on only three tries.

Junior Tyler Bessire had eight receptions for 43 yards, including a 15-yard TD connection with Lehner. The Muckers had two touchdowns nullified by penalties; they were assessed nine penalties for 69 yards.

Defensive back Kevin McElroy had two interceptions and seven tackles, five of them unassisted, and sophomore linebacker Mike Dolfin had 14 tackles, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble.

Bobby Murray, healthy after surgery corrected a breathing problem, forced a fumble at the goal line and recovered the football in the end zone for a touchdown.

Eric White, a move-in from Arizona by way of Ely, returned a punt 65 yards for a score. Thibodeaux also had several key open-field tackles to prevent the Saints from doing even more damage.

"We showed a lot of heart today," coach Curt McElroy said. "We had six turnovers but we hung in there and played strong for the win. We are not the biggest team around but we have a lot of heart and get after the ball on every play. I am very proud of how hard they worked today.

"There were many bright spots for us today," said McElroy, "but one of the things I think the boys learned is they have to be better conditioned ... that is something we will work on."

Mountain View (1-1) rallied after trailing 36-12 early in the third quarter, but was stopped one yard short of a first down at the Tonopah 20-yard line with 37 seconds left.

Evan Entler passed 50 yards to Craig Sacra to start the comeback, and Cortland LeBoeuf threw 12 yards to Robert Hernandez to bring the Saints within 36-28 with 2:40 left in the game.

Mountain View's first-half scores came on a 4-yard run by LeBoeuf and a 20-yard pass by Entler to Hernandez.

Entler completed 17 of 32 passes for 243 yards, all school records, and Hernandez had five catches for 57 yards and the two TDs. He also recorded 13 tackles, had three interceptions and recovered a fumble.

LeBoeuf rushed 14 times for 92 yards and a TD in addition to the touchdown pass to Hernandez.

Logan Williams had nine tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.
